D&D 5E Cloud kingdoms....brainstorming

My first idea is floating island thanks a special mineral, the cavorite, but now my suggestion is a "vegetal cavorite", a cloud of "floating sargasso". Let's say their cells have got something like "midichlorians" with an anti-gravity effect, or something like hollow objects floating on the water, in this case a special incorporeal "ectoplasm". If a human or no-flying creature falls from the cloud it would fall to the "ghost sea". They wouldn't suffer damage by the fall, and they could breath the "incorporeal oxywater" but most of time they could be attacked and eaten by natural predators, like sea fauna.
my idea was similar - cloud fungi that germinate in clouds and produce massive buoyant networks of mycelium, with large mushrooms sprouting from the top from time to time ("cloud mushrooms")

A while back, I created a fantasy homebrew called Laceworld, inspired somewhat by Larry Niven’s Integral Trees novels.

Laceworld itself is an immense latticework structure in a gaseous nebula with a breathable atmosphere, orbiting a sun. Think…like a fantastic Dyson Sphere.

Some of the people lived on the latticework itself, but some lived in the floating seas & pools or asteroids that were also within the nebula.

From video games:

Baten Kaitos (fantasy setting where the humans had to sprout wings because the sea disappeared and the land became islands in the endless sky)

Skies of Arcadia (More of a pirate setting with sky ship and all that).

Larry Niven's novels The Integral Trees and The Smoke Ring may prove fruitful for inspiration.

edit: DannyAlcatraz beat me to one of the novels.

One of the "continents" of my homebrew world is a collection of islands both on the water and in the air. It use to be an entire landmass but after the immense damage wrought to the land during the creation wars, parts of the continent were ripped apart and sent aloft to form sky islands (possibly due to energies infused into the land by the Elemental Chaos and Limbo). The water locked islands are ruled over by many sea dwelling races like Sea Elves, Tritons, Sahuagins, Typhoon Dragons and Torrent-Soul Aboleths. The sky Islands are then ruled by flying races like Aarakocras, Avariels, Tornado Dragons, and Sky-Swimmer Aboleths.

One of the important element in the first deathgate cycle (the one in the "air" lands) that was important was water. where does water go? Where does it come from? It was a valued commodity in this setting.
