I think I've come to the conclusion that elementals have too low a CR. An Elder Storm Elemental is no way only CR 11.

Is it just the Storm Elemental though? It seems to maul anything that cannot burrow and hide, where the other elementals aren't quite so bad (or maybe just haven't pummeled me enough to stick in memory).

Storm Elementals are 1 CR higher than other elementals, thus the elder is CR 12, not 11.

But that definitely is not enough. It seems like all greater and elder elementals need to be bumped up in CR, but they sure put a good scare into a 9th level party of PC's!

They sure do put a scare into us, I mean, those parties of 9th level PCs. I can hardly wait to meet the other three elementals that have to be waiting for us in there somewhere.

Gansk, confirmation on the ruling on protection from (alignment) spells with regard to enchantment (charm) spells is in order (based on the Celestia arena).

Charming

Okay, can we get how charming works in the BoAA cleared up? I was under the impression that it caused you to fight for the opposing side and thus treat those combatants as allies.

That's true in a normal situation where a creature is charmed once. If it is charmed by both sides, it needs to process the instructions of the charmers and make a decision of what to do based on those instructions and its own motivations. Its default motivation in the arena is to fight any original opponents who are not charmers.
