Clumsiness of ability scores

Well, I think the stats themselves are still useful in many ways- ability required for spellcasting, feat prereqs, etc. You're talking about making a change that doesn't really improve anything and, imho, one that sucks out a lot of flavor.

You start off the thread saying that it's basically a hassle to have the raw ability scores, but what you're proposing just reverses the order of operations of the hassle. If it ain't broke don't fix it. ;)

I am a big proponent of the notion that if you are going to institute a change in the game, there had better be a good reason.

IMO, the positive effects of such a change would be too minor to justify about the confusion attendant in bringing it to pass.

Instead of getting rid of the 3-18 ability score system, I would like to see it made more useful. I still do ability checks as 3d6 roll under your ability score (4d6 for difficult checks), rather than d20 + ability modifier vs. DC simply because I LIKE that mechanic (for everything but opposed rolls).

In fact, I was hoping Castles & Crusades would use something like this system, rather than their SIEGE system, which (while interesting and fairly intuitive) still requires the ability score/ ability modifier dichotomy and the setting of DCs by the referee.

For the record, I am NOT proposing a change, but pointing out that it should have been implemented IN THE FIRST PLACE, when they launched 3rd ed. Either that, or don't make 3-18 stats irrelevant.
