CLW wand clarification

Keep in mind the (possible) different caster levels across the classes. If a single-classed bard makes a wand of cure light wounds, the minimum caster level will be 2nd, increasing its power slightly and increasing the cost/price. Same thing goes for other classes, such as with druids and clerics. A druid can make a wand of flame strike, for instance (usable by clerics), but a cleric cannot. Etc. :)

I have all my Wands set at a minimum of 3rd level (the minimum level to take Craft Wand).

I figure if you have to BE third level to take the feat, then that's the minimum caster a Wand could be created at. (Although the creator could make it at a lower level if he WANTED to, I guess).

Notice that most of the wands of first level spells in the DMG are priced at CL 1.

Noticed. I (in essence) give a price break in my games, as ALL wands have 3rd level as the default level. I.e a CLW Wand that does 1d8+3 costs the same as the 1d8+1 Wand.

I'm aware of the gp impact and plan accordingly. (All Magic Missile wands fire 2 bolts, etc).

Just works for me.

Although when I randomly determine a Wand's Caster Level as part of a treasure hoard I occassionaly roll 1d10, d12 or d20 and and 3 to it to get the Caster Level. A Wand of Magic Missles at 23rd level goes a looongggg way.

I think you mean, "... a wand of flame strike [at CL7]," right?

Otherwise, I don't see why a cleric couldn't make a wand of flame strike ...

That wasn't specified in the original post. Made me go "huh?".

Hmm.

It seems awfully... frivolous for a wizard to spend that much extra money for a little bit of range and SR penetration on a wand...

It's hard to justify increasing the CL of a Wand of Magic Missiles above 9th to your Accounting Department. You're increasing the cost from 6750 to 17250 to make it CL 23; by leaving the CL at 9, you could make it a Wand of Empowered Magic Missile for only a few k more!

Which is why I rarely do it. Only tend to do it when the PC's get a major Treasure Haul (like a dragon's hoard).

Plus, whoever said all wizards are sane. Insanity + POWER can lead to some wierd items being made.

Yes, that's how you end up with a wand of Magic Missile at 9th caster level.. which is hollow, and contains a wand of Maximized Meteor Swarm.

"But who would put a.." A crazy Wizard, that's who. Getting a little paranoid and a lot crafty in his old age, "putting a little aside" for a rainy day.

But, crazy != stupid, and a CL23 wand of magic missile is not smart. It's comical.

Joke aside, that's not possible.

Er, it is if you take a Wizard of Epic level and choose to Craft an Epic Wand that can toss the same Maximized Meteor Swarms that the Wizard does (a ninth level spell with +3 metamagic spell level modifier, so 12th level), as a 24th level Epic Wizard is able to cast after three Epic Feats spent on Improved Spell Capacity [presuming the Wizard has the 22 Int required to learn such].

We're talking "old, *powerful* Wizard" here. Quite possibly cranky as well. :)
