Hm. I looked at CNN.com but I couldn't find anything either...

As much as many ppl would like to call American media to task, media bias is a deeper worldwide problem, even the BBC and CBC have received criticism for good reasons. The real problem is the convergence of media ownership: the news for the many in the hands of the few... Do you really trust mass media outlets that has rich owners with intimate politcal connections to a nation's halls of power?

Here in Canada, Canwest Global owns most of our newspapers; when their Winnepeg head office decreed that all newspapers would carry editorials "issued from HQ" there was great protest among local editorial staff--some left in protest and others were sacked. As far as I'm concerned, when this growing monopolization happens to our news you can kiss the concept of "free press" goodbye--I consider corporate owned mass media a threat to democracy. If all we get now is advocacy journalism, rather than fair journalism (one offering many different views equal "airtime"), then we're not getting "the full story"...

I watch CBC, CTV, and when I can CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and various internet news outlets to get "the big picture" of an issue. Unfortunately this takes alot of time, it would be nice to find a media source I could actually trust rather than what I'm being told to trust! ("Trust me!" Yeah right; that means "I'm really a liar but I won't admit it.") I have more faith in journalism that's willing to look at all sides, (just two opposing views is not enough either), but maybe I'm too idealistic?

So I guess in this day and age one should make it a habit to look at diverse news sources--otherwise you won't get anywhere near the truth--pity, I say

Speaking of truth... all of what I just said applies to the world's media perception of minorities, such as us gamers! Getting the truth about our hobby out there is daunting in such a biased, profit driven media environment. The media is only interested in selling bad news, controversy--or poking fun at those who are perceived as unconventional. The results of the Myers-Briggs thread here implies how we, as gamer personalities, are rather different than the masses... Maybe that's a good thing for us But gaming will only be news worthy if the hobby is perceived as a problem--and the media loves to perpetuate such perceptions to sell their product!

Hey, on the brightside regarding our interests, one can explore this in our Spycraft or d20 Modern games! In either case, who are the dark masters behind the massmedia in your game? Have fun!

Nope, I don't trust any one news source any longer. Though I do have to say, the coverage on Univion is pretty "unbiased" compared to some of the other coverage. They tend to focus more on individual actions and events rather than making "big picture" analysis. Of course, my Spanish is pretty weak, so I could be wrong on that one.

You are absolutely right however, about the state of mass media and democracy, unfortunatly as yet it has been difficult to create an alternative source of news with the same capabilities of our current corporate structure.

My answer? Listen to Democracy Now, hosted by Amy Goodman, the most left wing out there news coverage in the free world. She brings you stories you wont hear anywhere else, and finds experts who can intelligently (most times) refute the party line. She also has a habit of taking democrats to task as often as republicans, and she does not simply monitor American news. Then, i listen to Rush Limbaugh, the most right wing out there news coverage in the free world. He also brings stories to light you wont hear elsewhere, and will argue most anything with most anyone. Sadly, his dialouge has become mostly dogma, and he rarely does debate anymore, simply shovels out his views, but his news segments, which are a significant portion of each hour are still worth the listen.

If what happened to them recently is any indication, I'd say the CR for each one would be 1/8 or so, but not much higher than 1/4.

I thought it was funny how CNN kept referring to that one crazy Iraqi journalist as "Baghdad Meepo".

Well, for a party where the "tank" is an actual armored vehicle squadron, the "artillery" is a bomber unit, the "scout" is a spy sat network... Only the "medic" is less powerful than in D&D.
