Collaborative Setting: Faeries

Wailentarn -

A small mountain lake in the mortal realms where long ago a knight of the Order of Johannes dispatched an old banshee by drowning her. The spirit of the banshee infused with the waters of the lake creating a large wave that crashed down on the shores, killing the knight. Now a spectre of the knight wanders the shores, warning all to stay away, and during any heavy rainfall, the lake creates an effect similar to the Wail of the Banshee spell,, affecting an area 1 mile in radius around the lake.

Hook: Settlers have started to build a small outpost near the shores of the lake and initially petition the adventurers for help with the spectre.

The Nerdwyr, or Shadar-Kai, are a sinister and bizarre form of Fae known for their penchant for darkness and even the realm of Nightmare. Despite most Fae despising this place, the Nerdwyr travel freely between the two - but they return changed. They are known for their great, rotting ships, crewed by only one Nerdwyr but by sight requiring thirty or more, and their ability to travel anywhere within the Dream-Realms... for a price. It is possible that Nerdwyr are in fact the results of a breeding between elementals and the more malicious Jacks, but it is unknown.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, I think someone should point out Raven Crowking's posts on just this kind of thing (so I will). His ideas are very inventive and fit nicely into what we've been doing here.

I think in the spirit of this current thread, we should not consider this link as a submission, and feel free to contradict any kind of setting-like material that might be in there, counter to what the OP has laid out as the ground rules (as I am not presenting RC's work as "cannon" but as inspiration).

Enjoy!

A Fey most frightening to those with the imagination to believe in her, and the mortality to fear her, is Elle, also known as Old Age, One of three sisters...She is seen as an old crone with a hacking cough and little hair, whenever she is in a town or city many of the old die, and others feel older, and more tired, pain in their joints, until the hag is gone.

Edited for bad editing

Found at the center of the sprawling forests of the Schwarzwald massif 'The Temple of the Blood Rose' is home to a clerical order of Paladins and open only to women. It is said that the Temple was constructed by a female Jack named Rose whose parents had died due to the affliction brought when Elle came to town. The girl Rose invoked the assitance of the Bona Dea who manifested and gave her comfort and a mission of Compassion for the Bona Dea was Maia the youngest of the Three Sisters and known to mortals as the Bona Dea, the eternal virgin and the Spring Maiden.

The Spring Maiden does not hold a court but instead spends her time walking the Schwarzwald restoring life in the wake of her elder sister's passing. In this she is joined by many and not least by the Sisters of the Temple.

Young virgin girls are recruited from the surrounding villages and taken to the Temple to be trained. During this time they are not allowed contact with males and even male animals are not allowed within the precincts of the Temple.

During their time in the Temple the neophytes must wear a hooded robe stained red in the juice of the Blood Rose however on completion of there training they may remove the robe and return to their villages or roam the land as healers, counsellors and midwives.

Hook: The PCs are asked to escort a neophyte through the Schwarzwald only to find that they are stalked by a Wolf who is more than he seems...

Ardemaedis (King of Spring)

DJCupboard Thanks for the link! It is a very interesting read. ;)

The Most Smitten and Fourth Son (2 Times Removed), The Masked Lord, King of Spring, Ardemaedis

He is what we would something akin to a half-fae troll. Large and ugly, strong and brutish, whose unfae-like presence belies a very intense and intelligent and focused lord. His is monstrous visage is horrifying to the point of becoming beautiful. He wears a mask that hides his grim visage from others from a fright that some thing may cause death. It is rumored that Elawyn has been the only creature to be able to look upon his face without fear or even a hint of grimacing or displeasure.

He is very smitten with Elawyn Leafscale, the Queen of Autumn prior to Gormloch's usurpation. He pines for her return to power, or even her return from her hiding even though she has always rebuffed his advances.

The Underpass Dwarves

The Dwarves of the Underpass Caverns became trapped in Faery long ago, when a breech in the Midnight Wall and its subsequent repair brought a part of the mortal world into Faery. The insular dwaves do all they can to stay out of the various courts' intrigues, but their time in Faery is starting to affect their physiology. The latest generation was born with crows feet and other oddities and the colors of their beards now run the whole spectrum. Some are even starting to show an affinity for arcane magic.

In the rare cases when the Fae and Dwarves interbreed, gnomes are produced. Few in number, they are more adept at bringing temporarily dreamstuff into the mortal world than others, explaining their proficiency with illusions.

The spring court is currently divided - Ardemaedis barely has the upper hand, and uses the title of king, but no ruler may claim rightful kingship without being seated on the throne. With the original court inaccessible, he has to rule with an iron fist. Weather in springtime is chaotic because of this infighting.

Sorry to keep doing this.

Trolls are an ancient goblinoid corruption of fae giants, originally created to be goblin spies in the fae realm, but when the first passed through to Dreaming they lost most of their intelligence and are now not much more than ravening monsters.
