Colossal D&D Miniatures News!

I can't believe we're all geared up (me included) to spend $50 on a plastic toy that costs about $2 to make. I wonder how good the detail will be?

If my kid saw a plasic monster for $50 in toysRus with no motor or sounds or any kind of "action", and begged me to buy it, I'd tell him he's nuts!

No wonder our significant others think we're children. :)

Bravo my friend, bravo. Nail on the head. I read this press release to my wife and she looked at me like I had grown a second head.

Oh, I'm sure it will be more than $2 to make. Perhaps $3. :) That's not counting the time spent painting it or designing it in the first place.

Cheers!

Which is probably the same thing my wife will do when I try to buy this!

A while back I saw a quote from someone who "used to be in the business" of making plastic miniatures like the D&D miniatures & Mage Knight miniatures (in this case he was discussing Mage Knight figures).

While plastic miniatures are less expensive in raw materials compared to metal miniatures (the plastic being cheaper than the metal), the same isn't true of the molds. Molds for metal miniatures are very cheap. Molds for plastic miniatures are very expensive. The price he quoted for each mold was about £20,000, IIRC (it might have been £10,000). Of course, this was the price when he used to be in the business, late 80's-90's. This is also the cost for the mold for a single piece. Miniatures tend to be made of several pieces (especially large figures).

Now, that price is spread out among all the miniatures that are made from that mold. However, contrary to popular opinion, plastic miniatures aren't necessarily "dirt cheap." You have to make a lot of them to come close to making your money back.

Nope. I can guess "the Tarrasque", but much more than that I don't know.

This was a complete shock to me. I expected one Colossal figure, but not a range of really big figures! :)

Cheers!

I want a colossal Beholder. Then I can show up at a game with my bowling ball bag!
