Snark. Good one coyote6! I can only hope that my players offer to buy them for me without previewing them in the store!

Glyfair said:A while back I saw a quote from someone who "used to be in the business" of making plastic miniatures like the D&D miniatures & Mage Knight miniatures (in this case he was discussing Mage Knight figures).
While plastic miniatures are less expensive in raw materials compared to metal miniatures (the plastic being cheaper than the metal), the same isn't true of the molds. Molds for metal miniatures are very cheap. Molds for plastic miniatures are very expensive. The price he quoted for each mold was about £20,000, IIRC (it might have been £10,000). Of course, this was the price when he used to be in the business, late 80's-90's. This is also the cost for the mold for a single piece. Miniatures tend to be made of several pieces (especially large figures).
Now, that price is spread out among all the miniatures that are made from that mold. However, contrary to popular opinion, plastic miniatures aren't necessarily "dirt cheap." You have to make a lot of them to come close to making your money back.
I have one of the MacFarlane dragons and I agree that they're well sculpted and painted.megamania said:I have interest in these but at 50 apiece I may have to look elsewhere. Someone mentioned McFarlane's dragons which are nicely done though they don't look exactly like the WoTC ones but work well. I bought one for 13.00 this weekend. With that in mind, 50 dollars is a scarey amount to spend.
