The true challenge is monsters and enemies are too powerful or weak if the PCs can use the right tools and weapons. With high-tech a dinosaur could be killed with only a shot, or a horde of zombies could be easy hit by a trailer or big vehicle. In a survival horror adventure only a psycho-killer with a simple knife can be a nightmare for unarmed civilians PCs, but a militar squad of PCs with firearms could kill dozens of them. How should be the distribution of XPs reward?

I was curious. I'm making a futuristic, scifi, fantasy type campaign and was wonder if its possible to combine D&D 5e and D20 Modern?

Trying to make 5e work for a near future setting myself. It is a formidable amount of time and energy to make this work. You moreorless have to rewrite the core rules to remove the baked in flavor.

Start small, with a handful of options you want to feature in your modern setting. When you have time, branch out from there.
