Comic recommendations?

After a long absence from comics, I picked up the Death of Superman, World without a Superman, Return of Superman and Batman: Hush trade paperbacks. After reading these, I'm looking for some recommendations.

What are some other trades or comics you would suggest? Generally, I prefer the old staples like; Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, X-Men or Spiderman. I’ve been out of touch for a long time so I’m fairly unfamiliar with the latest changes.

Thanks.

^It's a pretty good time for mainstream comics, content-wise. The current Lee/Azzarello Superman is pretty cool, and I even like Chuck Austin's Action Comics -- Superman/Batman is also a very fun read.

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men is a solid read, though I personally don't think it's as good as Morrison's run on New X-Men.

I don't follow Amazing Spider-Man, but JMS of Babylon 5 fame has been shaking things up over there, and it's generally well-regarded. I love Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man -- it has an updated kind of 80s vibe.

Lesser known mainstream titles I highly reccomend: She-Hulk, District X, Y the Last Man, Runaways, Invincible... and more that I can't think of just now :)

And, if you haven't already, pick up The Ultimates! You'll be able to read all of volume 1, which is completed, and go right into volume 2 in December. The rest of us had to wait a long time...

Let's see here.

Kind of depends on when you stopped reading comics. There are some really excellent trades out there for Supes, Batman, and the JLA. Kingdom Come is really worth reading, as is Long Halloween and Dark Knight Returns. DK2 is not nearly as good as the first one; I wouldn't bother picking it up. There are some really fun JLA trades and one-shots out there as well - I'd probably pick up Tower of Babel, Earth 2, and maybe a couple of others.

In the Marvel line... hm. Ultimates is an excellent title (there are two trades for that). In general, the Ultimate Universe is really solid stuff. Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spidey both have a great series of TPBs for them. Strazinsky's run on Amazing Spider-Man has been consistently excellent, as I've come to expect from his stuff. Neil Gaiman's 1602 (mutants start showing up in 1602 England) is awesome, though I think it'll be a while until that comes out in TPB form. Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is the best X-title out currently - the rest are a jumbled mess, IMO, and not at all worth checking out.

In the smaller-press stuff, I'd recommend Y - The Last Man and Fables, both excellent series. Powers was an excellent series for some time, though I haven't really enjoyed it recently. Read "Who Killed Retro Girl?" and "Sellouts" for a very interesting examination of how normal people would deal with super-heroes. Midnight Nation and Rising Stars are both excellent reads, though Rising Stars is intensely frustrating, since it was canceled just a few issues before the end. Still, it is good enough that it's very much worth reading. Preacher is good if you enjoy Garth Ennis's twisted nature. And, of course, you should read Neil Gaiman's Sandman if you haven't already. EVERYONE should read Sandman.

Yeah, that should be enough to get you started.

"DK2 is not as good..." is the understatement of the century... :)

Here's what I recommend:

Tradepaperbacks:

JLA: New World Order (collects the first Grant Morrison arc)
JLA: Rock of Ages
JLA: Tower of Babel

Any JSA tpb from Geoff Johns run, specially JSA: The Return of Hawkman

Nightwing: A Knight in Bludhaven

Ongoing:
The current Teen Titans and Outsiders series
The upcoming Green Lantern: Rebirth (aka The Return of Hal Jordan)

Well, I didn't want to offend Eric's Grandma. Couldn't really encapsulate the level of suck without doing so.

Remebered another one I'd recommend: Kevin Smith's restart of Green Arrow, entitled Quiver. Good read, and you can very much tell that Kevin Smith loves writing for those characters.

Actually, I saw 1602 in TPB form just this past week. It surprised me, and I would have picked it up if I'd had the money...

If you like "old school" DC stuff, you should pick up the current "Human Target" series by Peter Milligan. Very good. Lots of interesting questions about the nature of identity mixed in with just generally interesting crime-type stories like you'd see on Law & Order or CSI.

Similarly, 100 Bullets is an excellent series. It's very film-noir-ish, with an overarching storyline that holds the series together, even while it has many short and complete story arcs within the framework.

I think all the Ultimates are pretty good, actually. The GI Joe titles are pretty awesome, too. (They are much different than the cartoon and old comics.) An unsung pick which is more interesting than you may think is Marvel's Emma Frost, detailing the youth of the notorious White Queen.

Admitedly, there are also several other comics I am considering giving the boot as they have just gotten too bad.

Witchblade
Teen Titans (seems to go nowhere and not meeting expectations)
Wonder Woman (see above)
