Community Points of Light

I don't think anything has been agreed upon. I just think we are throwing around some ideas on how to proceed. With that being said, I'm doing some reading on the history of Istanbul...and when I get more of my thoughts and ideas straightened out...I'm going to be writing something up.

As to where to host it...that's a good question. Setting up a blog is quite easy and painless....just have to set up a free Blogger account, and those that want to contribute are given admin access. As for a wiki...I did just a brief search about some free Wiki services, and found a couple, such as www.wikidot.com. But I'm not all familiar with setting up the format, and not quite sure this service will be able to go as deep as I think we would like. I don't think setting up dedicated hosting would be necessary.

I guess if you are interested in contributing, start developing some content...we got a couple months to get ready. :)

My PoL- location, point by point:

1) A small farming community existed in a verdant area close to a river. Flanked by barbaric horsemen to the West and hobgoblins to the East, the community was extorted and raided against too much to make it evolve.

2) A powerful wizard and her many apprentices found out that there existed a great nexus of arcane energies at the location where the farmers were.

3) The wizards didn't like farming but still needed food. They struck a deal with the farmers, the wizards getting food and help with building accomodations while the farmers got protection in turn.

4) The community evolved around the wizards and farmers. The wizards struck back at the horsemen, hobgoblins and other creatures that tried to raid the new town. The town grew and became a city, the arcane nexus attracting more wizards, which in turn attracted merchants.

5) The town became a city ruled by a council of wizards cooperating with the descendants of the original farmers who are now the secular lords of the city. Hiring mercenaries, the city now aims to clear safe routs to kingdoms to the North and the Empire to the West of the horsemen. This expansion is not being looked at kindly by ancient powers of the plains, unknown about until this day...

6) At the same time, a wizard has found means of directly connecting to the Nexus, making it possible for him to immensly increase his power. To do this, however, he needs the blood of thousands to spill on the ground of the city. The wizard has secretly made contacts with a hobgoblin warlord. The wizard will betray the city if the hobgoblins chose to attack.

I think the above can be put on any map in any setting. The last two points above offers material for at least one campaign for PCs to go from heroic to epic.

1. My POL is The Corpse of the Beast. I am not so sure about DND size classes, but This massive beast from ancient ancient times and from the place where abberants come from was killed aeons ago and is sitting in this sierra rotting away, no one has ever seen the whole of the abomination, only parts of it. It's just this huge corpse, and around it forests, plains, deserts form, some places, corrupted things live hollowed out and made lives there, all manner of abberants upset the nature around them, and it's nature corrupts good noble creatures such as canines, and men fall prey to dark emotions like envy, and avarice in the sight of it. The people have never seen a sunset, or a sun rise for fear to look at it's corrupting countenance at dusk. It is said the if you look at the Beast at dusk, your doppleganger will come for everything that is yours.

The Beggars Parade in my game is a collection of adventure's that do good deeds in exchange for hospitality around The Corpse of the Beast, it's sort part circus, part necessary duty, part mob of character classes dedicated to protecting those in the shadow of the beast from it's corruption. All the PC's are lovingly referred to as the Beggars Parade and in addition to character classes there are many people: beggars, lepers, outcasts, philosophers, and emissaries from many races that travel along. The point of the beggar's parade is sort of a roaming set of characters that would populate every inn, and camp necessary , as well as allow people to freely switch character in my DEMO games.

I gotta say I love this idea. If anyone ever starts such a site I would definately like to know.

For my first 4e campaign I was going to design an area of 30 square miles or so and say that there were mountains in one direction and a sea in another and that was it. I'd try to keep the PC's in the 30 mile area for a few levels and then go from there.

I just hope that if someone did this they would make sure that most people who posted areas would stick to the POL and world stuff (no crazy backstories or the like) unless it could only apply to thier area for a good (and simple) reason.

I have a world map done in the Tolkien style of mapmaping if anyone would like to use as a base. Also editthis.info offers free wikis.
Well, I think many, many people like seeing well-done maps, especially in the art & co. subforum. :)

Cheers, LT.

Okie Dokie :)

So I went ahead and made a quick a dirty blog for those that would like to contribute to a Community Points of Light (Sources of Shadow) Campaign Setting.

For the time being we can use this blog, www.pol-sos.blogspot.com , until a sexier place can be found/agreed upon.

If you would like to author material, my suggestion would be create a free e-mail account of some type (such as gmail), and you can e-mail it to me and I will enter it in the blog so you can post you material.

As always your feedback and suggestion are appreciated.

/cheers
