Commuting to a game

Do you find that a commute defies your efforts to find a game or other players? Just how far are you willing to drive (milage one way) or how much time are you willing to spend in your car (traffic time) to get to a game?

Personally I live to the south of Washington DC in Woodbridge VA. It sounds like there is quite a bit of gaming going on in DC but it is forever beyond my reach due to the insane commute into the city.

The secret is to run (or at least host) the game, then the commute is easy. Generally for me, either that is the case or it's a weekend game so it's less of an issue. I did join a game several years back that was on a weeknight on the other side of the city, and I didn't last long in it.

I run the game at my place - but I have had players who commute in from Jersy (about 45 minute drive) and one player took a 1 1/2 hour bus ride down from th4e Hudson Valley and then another hour on the subway to get to south brooklyn.

When one of my player's job sent her to Boston for a few months - she flew down every other weekend to play.

Depends on how often the game runs. I'd probably be willing to drive 20-30 miles one way for a game that I really enjoyed playing in. I do, however, have a player that flies up from Phoenix once a month for our monthly gathering.

I drive from the north end of the city to the south side to game. It usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour but I've had it take up to two hours. It's worth it!!

I live on an island (Vashon; southwest of Seattle). Half of the group lives on the irritating-to-get-to-by-highway part of the mainland (Kirkland); it generally takes a little under two hours to get from one end to the other, assuming non-rush-hour traffic. Often, we take a bus most of the way, to save $14 on the ferry ride, not to mention gas.

One of the games I run, I have a guy that commutes to Chicago from suburban Washington D.C. to play. :)

(Granted, he doesn't make every session, and he combines the sessions with visits with other friends, too...)

I DM mostly and prefer to do so from home or from the FLGS, which used to be a lot farther than it is now. When playing, I'm not adverse to commuting up to an hour for the right game.

In the games with which I am currently involved, I commute the following distances:

  • 15 minutes for the Changeling: the Dreaming game
  • 30 seconds for the Shackled City game
  • 1 minute for the Shadowrun game
  • 20 minutes to my Vampire: the Masquerade LARP
  • 1 hour, 15 minutes for the Age of Worms game

LARP-wise, I've traveled across the country to get to some games, but those are special events. I used to make it to Cleveland (2.5 hours) for a game that I was running.

I regularly will drive 30 to 60 minutes for games...but this is Chicago, where it just takes a while to get places (we frequently drive half an hour just for dinner).

I think about where I grew up (Green Bay)...where 30 minutes would put you in Appleton, while 60 minutes would put you in Fond du Lac or Sheboygan, and those are considered to be "big" drives. :)
