Companies Fans would like to see Interlock

Something that could be done, instead of one big mega gampaign book would be a series of modules.

One company would be responsible for each module in the series, each would be scaled to a different level of PC's.

Each module would begin and end with an open of a enough concept that they could be linked together.

A core outline of event progression would be done at the start, and from there it would be largely open.

(I have this all ironed out in my head but I am having a hard time putting it to words)

DC Comics did something very similar back in the eighties. There was basically a 12 issue maxi series where each issue had a different team of writers and artists. (I do not remember the name of the series, but I remember Einstein being integral to the plot) They developed a basic core out line but each team was responsible for building on what had come before.

It was fairly interesting.

Scheduling product release would be the big issue, as printer schedules would ultimately get in the way if it wasn't monitored. A team at the core that would check continuity, basically another tier of editors, would be essential.

I for one would like to see something like this done. I think it would be fantastic as it would raise the bar on third party publishing, something that for my dollar than can never be enough of.

Having witnessed first hand the issues surrounding doing a simple trilogy with different authors involved, and keeping in mind how much work it is just to keep a single co-operative effort going at one time, my mind boggles at all the possible ways this could turn sour (author for Part 3 of 5 flakes, publisher X has huge crisis surrounding their main line of products and has to divert resources, Printers A, B and C have established credit with different printers who all work on a different schedule, FLGS in Nebraska only carries parts 1 and 4 of 5 because their customers "don't like Company A and X's products," etc, etc, etc).

Ow! My head!

I wish I was making any of this up, but I can *easily* see any or all of those things happening. Such a giant co-operative venture would have to have much much larger rewards than publishers tend to get from selling adventures to make it worthwhile.

Sorry to be the pessimist.

That was Disneyland Me talking. It would be cool to see, but I could also see all of the mentioned issues occurring as well. Nevertheless, it is cool that publishers are starting to coordinate their products a bit, and at least discussing more ambitious works publicly. :)

I could see the problems Nickchick was talkingabout when I first started this thread. One of the reasons why the products would have to be very loosely based together. A triology or other tightly fitted format just won't work.

Nicole makes some very good points.

It is a shame that reality rains down on dreams occasionally.

However,

What about an EVENT that could span across multiple scenarios. Something that isn't time based, and missing one "issue" of the series isn't necessarily going to ruin the ultimate outcome.

Perhaps, and I realize this is cheezy, a comet suddenly appears in the sky and it effects each world/setting differently and those effects would be the crux of the story.

Enterprising DM's could link the modules together to their own tastes that way.

From my point of view it isn't so much about how it is done, but that an effort of this scale should be attempted occasionally. The interlock system is something cool, and it is only going to make the environment better for everyone involved.

Katerek - get out of here! Overland Park, KS?!?

I am in O.P., KS right now!
I used to live in O.P., but moved to Spring Hill last month.

And here I thought I was the only KC person on here. wow.

Let's do lunch sometime.

die_kluge & Katerek:

You are *not* the only KC-area people on the boards. Yours truly lives not far from OP, KS, as well :) Maybe we can all do lunch sometime?

Cheers!
