D&D 5E Companion thread to 5E Survivor: Species

It was when they were introduced. The 2E version of Spelljammer (and the giff) are infinitely superior to the 5E versions.

"The giff pride themselves on their weapon skills, and any giff will have a number of swords, daggers, maces, and similar tools on hand to deal with troublemakers. In giff terms, a troublemaker is any non-giff one's boss tells him is a troublemaker. Giff will collect weapons as well, accumulating pole arms from half a hundred worlds and being able to tell the origin and purpose of said arms, and what they killed most recently.

But the giff's true love in weaponry is guns. Their love of explosives serves as a good warning to other races. Any giff will have a 20% chance for an arquebus (or, rarely, a wheel lock) and sufficient smoke powder for 2-8 shots. A misfiring weapon is of little matter to the giff (occasional fatalities are expected)-the flash, noise, and damage is what most impresses them."
Yeah, I remember. It's just a weird thing to say about a species.

"Loving guns is in my DNA!" has a pretty bad ring to it in this day and age.

Sure. So instead it's now a gods-given love of guns...so baby giff are born knowing how to use guns...which is even weirder.

"Firearms Mastery. You have a mystical connection to firearms that traces back to the gods of the giff, who delighted in such weapons. You have proficiency with all firearms and ignore the loading property of any firearm. In addition, attacking at long range with a firearm doesn't impose disadvantage on your attack roll."

Aaand that's why I didn't support them in the poll.

Giff are a pretty cool species in D&D. In 5e, they're mostly just a vehicle for the 'god made them this way' school of making cultural traits biological. They really felt like an attempt to catspaw their nonsense with the orcs and Drunk Dad Gruumesh.

I think it was more a damned if you did damned if you did not, they never expected dnd to get big and thus be seen as relent to talk about, thus they built a simple system for what they needed, they need a culture along with species system but they have never done it before.

I can somewhat see why a portion of customers may balk at guns. (Though, I imagine many also won't or don't.)

However, in a game where some species have innate abilities to spew fire and corrosive acid -with intent to kill- and mages have unlimited ammo with cantrips, is a hippo with a knack for using firearms from the 1500s really seen to be a major issue?

it is more how they implemented it that we question.

now there are no humans I feel at a loss of what to do? who do I down vote who do I up vote?

I can understand that a little more.

As for voting, I'm not sure what to say there.
I started by voting down what I liked least (changelings,) and they were eliminated.

I have voted for lizardfolk and tabaxi a few times each.

More recently, I voted for Owlin because I have a character idea that was inspired by the recent survivor threads: Owlin Bear-Totem Barbarian.

The Elves and the Half-Elves have plenty of points between them - over 50. There is a massive effort to remove these fantasy Vulcans but many are the fans of Drizzt and Legolas.
