Compelling D&D Images

I lean towards the classic D&D artists than the current look. Some of the stuff from artists like Erol Otus, Dave de Leuw, Clyde Caldwell, Jeff Easly, Larry Elmore, Timothy Truman (to name a few) have blown me away while other images do nothing for me (in other words, I like some of their stuff but not all ). Jeff Dee gets a mention by himself but that's probably the case so I can plug my gallery of his work.

That, and the guy knows how to draw Halflings.

If I remember correctly, the picture is titled "Saving the Best for Last". The little blurb on the inside cover of the magazine described how the skeleton is that of a frost giant previously slain by the ranger which has now risen for revenge. She has lost her sword and used up all her normal arrows and has just one magical arrow left....

I never really saw the problem here. I mean, this chick is apparently good enough to take down a frost giant, so she's probably 9th level or higher. She should have no trouble taking down a frost giant skeleton, which by the book has 1-8 hit points and does 1-6 points of damage with its one attack per round.

As for pics, Elmore's Death of Sturm does it for me:

Basic Set

The Red box Basic Set, 1983 or something, with the red dragon on the enormous hoard and the fighter lunging at him.

That defined fantasy for me. And it's Elmore.

Also, the cover for Ravenloft the original module ranks as one of the all time highs for me. That's Caldwell.

Also the cover of DL5 with all the heroes in one picture. That's Elmore again.

Today, I'm blown away by anything that Wayne Reynolds does. The images for the ads for 3.5 should have made the covers of the new books! The Githyanki thing he did for the Incursion thing... oh man!

Funny, Elmore does nothing for me. Obviously the guy is talented but his images, IMO, lack any sense of motion and come across as static. The people in them always seem to be posing. I'm glad WotC has moved on. Elmore, to me, defines what D&D was in the early to mid 90's. No need to revisit the past.

One of my favorites has always been the blue and white line picture from the 2e PHB opposite the description of the bard. (It showed an armored woman lying on a bier and could be interpreted as a fallen hero lying in state or a fallen valkyrie lying in enchanted sleep). Unfortunately, I've lost my 2e PHB (well, that's about the only thing I regret losing it for) and haven't seen a copy of it anywhere.

Yeah that one is cool. Isn't it supposed to be Iuz's sister?

That was an old Jeff Easely from Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth... Drelnza, the Vampire Daughter of Iggwilv (probably Iuz's half-sister)...damn did I have fun wreaking havoc on PC's with her..slippers of spider climbing in a spherical room...

A personal fave...Easely used to do LOTS of great B/W art...not so much anymore...
