It's a torch--a special torch with the quality "swordlike."

Or maybe it's not a beholder; it's a gas spore.

The other character on the cover looks like a tiefling. I would guess he's a warlock too. Hmmm, maybe just a rogue, although in that case, he should be behind/flanking the beholder/gas spore/illusion.

In any case I think the sword, while on fire, is an chemcial, not magical, effect. Even so I'm glad someone noticed...even if it wasn't me.

Btw there's nothing wrong with a Drow half sorcopian Ninja/Wizard with Sexy Jutsu Harems in his feat selection. At least not in my book.

What's the big deal with the sword flaming?

If the beholder is using it's old fire power, it's anti-magic eye can't be in the same spot can it? Or can it? I've been taking care of non-RPG materials so long I'm forgetting the basics man!

I stopped wondering a long time ago. But to my mind, the anti-magic eye does indeed stop the other eyes from "working."

I honestly don't have a big deal or care about the sword. Just someone else did and I'm semi-glad they noticed since I didn't. It's like watching a replay when someone points out to you "Hey that guy's foot is out side the lines!" Kind of deal.
