When Conan becomes king of Aqualonia, he is described as riding into battle wearing black full-plate.

Not quite. While the first 5 paragraphs of The Scarlet Citadel do describe him having 5000 knights in shining mail with lances, and stating that he himself wore black mail, we are never told if it is plate or not. It is said that his cavalry soldiers (knights) wore breastplates. So we can only assume that it is an ample plate suit. I would not say full plate in the D&D sense but plate most likely.

Aaron.

Hello, S'mon,
It's a British product and it's £5 cheaper in the US (and that's Mongoose's list price). Seems like Mongoose have a bad case of Games Workshop Disease. I think I'll give this and most other Mongoose products a miss.

Willingly missing the fact that a) distribution is from the US, b) the value of the Dollar is crashing through the floor right now and c) up to now, UK customers have been getting some stunning deals from the Mongoose (Slayer's Guides have held their £4.95 price tag since we started).

Not to mention that we cannot actually set prices in the UK. . .

You also have to ask what, in this day and age, is a British (or any other nationality) product? The book was laid out in England, written in Wales, drawn for in Brazil, painted for in Canada, printed in China, proofread in more countries than I can count and then sent to Texas.

So it has acquired a few accents on the way :)

The combat system is OGL, but different. It has two types of "AC's" that are your 'chance to be hit.' One type is a dodge-type the other is a parry-type. Armor only reduces damage. I think a lot of gamers have been looking for a system like this for a long time.

Now GURPS has Dodge and Parry values as well. Parrying is generally vastly superior to dodging, the latter being a defense of last resort.

Do these values work similarly in Conan?

From what I've gathered in the RPG.net threads on the Conan RPG, Parry and Dodge are both AC values. A character uses whichever is better, although I believe it was stated that you need room to maneuver in order to use the Dodge AC.

That's correct, you must have at least one empty five foot square or friendly occupied square in order to choose "Dodge" as your defense option each round.

I see, but what I'm getting at is, what are the pro and cons of dodging versus parrying? All other things being equal, would a character consistently prefer to use one over the other?
