Concealment

First Post
Hi fella,

About concealment phb p. 281 :

"Concealment (-2 penality to attack roll : The target is in a lightly obscured square or in an heavily obscured square but adjacent to you"

what does it mean if the target is not adjacent ? The penality is the same ? something going wrong in the text or I can't read it cause of the origin of my birth language :) ? So my question is : what is the penality in concealment for non adjacent ennemy ?

Thank's for your further answers ans sorry for my french-caw english

If you are in a lightly obscured square you have concealment. If you are in a heavily obscured square you will have concealment against adjacent creatures.

Now if you look at Total Concealment right below you will see that if you are in a square that is heavily obscured you will gain total concealment against all creatures not adjacent to you.

Ok, so what's happen when you make a range attack or reach melee attack against a target who is in a lightly obscured square ?

I had a question that came up...what if they are not in a lightly obscured square, but there are lightly obscured squares in between you and the target?

Thus:
OXXO

The O is the target and the attacker. They are standing in a clear square. X is a lightly obscuring fog/smoke/whatever.

Then you have concelment. But if he attacker moves to where there isn't concelment between him and you, then he's got a straight shot.

What if the target is in a heavy concealed square and holding a box that might or might not have a dead cat in it?

Can you still observe him?

the dead cat must both be there and not be there then.

The cat, being within a zone of total concealment, can make a Stealth check against your Passive Perception to become hidden.

While hidden, you are not informed of its exact location, and to attack the cat, you must guess the square it is in.

However, should you try to observe the cat with a minor action to Perception check, you will be aware as to the cat's presence.
