• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

D&D 5E Concepts you really want to play but not sure if you will be able to pull off.

Take the Human Variant and take Weapon Master as your first feat, that will grant you 4 weapon profiencies and a bump to Strength or dex. The Dragon Sorceror really doesn't need heavy armour, he has natural armour, but take a level of fighter, and you'll have your armour and a fighting style.

Alternate 2 Dwarf, Hill I think maybe mountain, for the Armour and use a Great Axe instead.

Alternate 3 Tiefling Paladin Oath of the Ancients which is less dependant upon the Gods then the other two, although i
it can still be connected to them if one chooses. Its got more blastery spells as well, like Ice Storm, Moonbeam, Feeblemind, although it leans more toward Druidish then Wizardy blasting.

I'd prefer human, and I like your basic point, but unfortunately a melee sorcerer doesn't scale well (or at all). He'd be fun for 5-6 levels and then he'd start being a lot more effective if he just stopped using his melee weapons and blasted people with cantrips.

Human sorcerer/paladin seems like a pretty cool option, really. Make him a paladin of Bahamut and the draconic stuff fits in nicely.

I don't know what sorts of specific spells you want this character to have, obviously, but you might get pretty close to what you're looking for just by going for a College of Valor bard.

It's tough to do anything sans armor without getting either RaaaAaaage or jet li thrown in.

To be fair, though, that's been the case--to one extent or another--in pretty much every edition, at least in terms of anything remotely approaching core rules. Though it's certainly easy enough to go high Dex and light armor.

Little bit meta, but I find it interesting that 5e gives us more options than ANY other basic D&Desque fantasy game (castle and crusades, pathfinder, 3.x, 4e, 13th age, etc etc) I have ever seen, yet inevitably a topic like this would pop up complaining about stuff you can't do before a topic that would praise the designers for giving us so many options. I get that there are some things you want to do but the rules don't accommodate them, I think these outlying fringe characters would be better suited to a game such as GURPS, HERO or Mutants and Masterminds. D&D covers most common tropes of fantasy pretty damn well IMO.

Oh, I definitely agree, and when the PHB comes out so I can legitimately say I've seen all the options available I will be sure to heap on the praise. Still worth looking for help and new ideas, though.

What's exciting and yet disappointing at the same time:

A multiclass Rogue (Assassin)/Fighter (Battle Master) might make a near-perfect representation of an Assassin's Creed-style Assassin (Altair or Ezio in particular). According to the forbidden document the abilities mixed together fit like a glove, practically ...

Except for one thing: No hidden blades. Or even something remotely similar like the katar. Booooooo.

I don't understand this.

No hidden blades? you can draw a blade for free in tandem with a movement and action. Done.
No katar? Dagger. Or Short Sword. Done.

Why is this a problem?

Yeah, I'm not sure I see the problem. A Katar is just a knife with a funky grip. Use slight-of-hand to conceal your blades. Poof. Done.

The combo that has me kind of tickled to play (assuming it works similarly to TWSNBN) is actually Beastmaster Ranger 3/Rogue X. I'm picturing a street kid with his trusty dog, cause that dog is a rogues best friend. :D
