Conjuror's Dimension Step & Shadow Mage's Shadow Step

Quick question: I searched cursorily on the forums but did not see this asked:

For both the Dimension Step of a Conjuror, and the Shadow Step of a Shadow Mage (p. 80 PFCR and p. 147 APG), can you use these abilities to step to a location not in line of sight or line of effect? Could a Shadow Mage, for instance, trapped in an underground bunker, shadow step to the surface as long as he knew it was only 20 feet above or so?

Official FAQs are always welcome, but even majority gamer opinion is handy, too. :) Thank you!

I would assume you do need line of sight

It is not stated, and many teleports don't need it but it looks like it is supposed to be modeled after dimensional door which does

Again, my opinion, DM may say otherwise and it would be nice if they did

Actually, Dimension Door doesn't need line of sight - you can simply visualize the location, or state distance and direction, in the spell description. It's actually what started the debate in our gaming group, and in the end the DM went with "since it compares in several ways to Dimension Door, we'll use that for the guideline."

I'm mainly looking to see if there's been any (un)official rule, or how other gamers are handling it.

My mistake, I was thinking of the travel domain's power which does state it needs Line of Sight

In that case, I would say yeah, you can zip anywhere you want within the abilities limitations

Well, they're both spell-like abilities, which work like spells unless otherwise stated.

For spells:

Line of Effect
[...] You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. You must have a clear line of effect to the point of origin of any spell you cast.

So, it looks like you're clear to teleport w/o LoE or LoS, so long as you've got both to yourself. :D

I can't speak about the shadow step. But I've always visualized Dimension Door (regardless of source) to be kind of like Nightcrawler. So to answer your questions: What would Nightcrawler do? / Could Nightcrawler do it?
