Contingency - Heal?

Could you cast the heal part of the contingency off a scroll? 1 level of cleric or some cross class ranks in UMD?

Meh, I guess technically that might work but I think I would likely limit the contingent spell to only working when actually cast by the same caster as the contingency spell.

However if the flavor of your campaign would work with it I think you could even have rogues with UMD using contingency and heal off of a scroll.

BTW has Chain Contingency ever been revised for 3.5? The last time I remember it was in Tome and Blood.

There's also the possibility that he used the Craft Contingent Spell item creation feat from Complete Arcane... which works, sort of like contincency but not quite.

*nod* That's pretty much was I was going to say. Craft Contingent Spell would let you pull it off, as it doesn't have the same spell-level limitations that Contingency does. On the other hand it takes time, money and exp to craft and if it's dispelled it's destroyed rather than just supressed.

But that feat is very specific in

"You can make contingent any spell that you know."

So even though it is an item creation feat it has a built in restriction of no cooperative magic because of this statement. It likewise prevents you from using a magic item to cast the contingent spell since you must know the spell.

So, unless there is another feat (or spell) out there, the wizard couldn't use the craft contingent spell to accomplish this and contingency prevents multiple contingency spells from being placed (regardless as to whether or not you interpret the text as allowing cooperative spell casting - although I still believe that only the caster of a spell can place it since the caster determines target(s) and location).

That might also prevent my proposal to use Limited Wish for the Heal.

I guess that means it's useless for Wizards, since they don't actually KNOW any spells. They only have spells in their spellbooks or not.

That appears to be incorrect. A wizard learns a spell when putting it in their spellbook. If the spellbook is later lost, the wizard still "knows" the spell. Example: the rules say:
"A wizard can use a borrowed spellbook to prepare a spell she already knows"

You'd do it using Craft Contingent Spell set to trigger a Limited Wish. The wish then duplicates the effects of a Heal spell. Assuming you don't have Conjuration as a prohibited school that is. If you do, you're kind of hosed; you'd need a full-blown Wish to pull it off.

So it's expensive and you'd have to already know Limited Wish, but it's doable.

Generally speaking the only folks you see whipping out Contingency: Heal without going to extraordinary measures are Mystic Theurges and certain types of dragons.
