CONTINGENCY SPELL. Any good idea???

BASTON!!!

First Post
Hello! My character is a high level wizard and i'm looking for some good way to use the Contingency spell.

Right now, "Fly" will go on if i'm attacked. There's always the good old Teleport to a friendly Temple if i'm badly injured, but that might means to let the others alone in a critical moment...

Do you have any good strategy in mind?

(Of course, I will not write all my spellbook here. I want to know even if I don't have the spell.)

Thanks! :D

It's always a good idea to have something to help you out if you get caught by an effect that would take you out of the fight. Have it set to cast break enchantment if you're charmed, cursed, turned to stone, etc.

Personally I reckon a good suddenly empowered false life if your current false life expires is pretty good. That's anywhere up to 50 extra hitpoints (from the maximum rolls on the original false life and the contingent false life).

The key with contingency is that you don't want it to be an even that happens all the time, or you're likely to waste the spell.

My epic level alienist has a contingency that activates a mirror image if she's attacked by weapon, creature or spell.

She also sports a chain contingency set to go off if she's subject to any version of dispel magic (assuming it survives the dispel). This triggers a xorn movement, greater invisibility and contact other plane (which, you might note, takes effect instantaneously). This allows her to instantly know who's after her and get the hell away (hopefully) if she's pressed.

You can use it as a 1-use free quicken spell. Set the trigger as "As soon I say ´Mary had a little lamb´" (or other phrase you won´t normally say)

I set it when I "attempt to vocalize" an obscure combination of words in three languages. That means that it still works even if I'm silenced, pinned, or otherwise unable to actually speak and minimizes the chance that the words will come up in random conversation.

The wizard in our group (currently 17th level) has his contingency set to polymorph him into a fire giant when his HP drop below half. His character is notorious for inadvertantly dying (so much so that we've got a seperate "mini" for his character, post-trap... it's a base with some flocking on it, and a pair of feet from an unfortunate, two dollar mini that spent too much time in a backpack), so the extra 70 or so HP he gets through the transformation are invaluable (though this may not work in your campaign, depending on the interpretation of Polymorph your DM uses.)

Depending upon how your DM handles timing, a neat one for 18th+ level wizards is "contingency Antimagic Field if I'm targetted by a Disjunction"

It's dismissable, but gives you an approx 80% chance of not getting your spells and items affected by the Disjunction - could be a real life saver...

With my epic spellcaster, I used "dimension door away if I'm ever hit in melee", carefully worded to make sure the dimension door works. It saved my skin once.
