HP and XP are both generalizing a lot of things that could be subsystems in a more realistic/detailed game, in favor of something more workable at the table. But I can explain what HP look like in-fiction and what they represent. (I can also easily houserule hp to make it better at either realism or genre emulation, depending on my goals. I often don't bother, but I know how.)I don't know about that. Hit points and XP are pretty strong contenders.
Still, point taken.
Turns do not exist in fiction. Your character isn't waiting around while the wizard does his thing before you act. But we can't actually run a tabletop game like that, so... turns.
