Conversions

I've done a conversion of the first part of A1 Against the Slavelords to 4e for a gameday. However, because it's not a complete conversion and because WotC doesn't have a good fansite policy to encourage me to do more work to make it useful to someone besides me, I'm not posting it anywhere.

I converted a fair bit of African influenced stuff for my first 4e campaign (now finished).

This included some creatures from Atlas Games' Nyambe and their adventure Dire Spirits. It was a hoot and the creatures worked well in 4e terms.

Also used the first dungeon of the Shattered Gates of Slaughtergarde for the campaign.

Cheers, C

Seriously? What exactly is holding you back?

PS: I am not as mad as Mr. Jacobson says

I'm about half way through my own EtCRavenloft conversion. Started 6th level, probably will end up around 12th.

As I said in another thread, it feels as though this adventure was written with a lot of the basic design goals of 4e in mind.

I forgot to my mention my own conversion effort: I'm running Queen of Spiders for my irregular lunchtime game at the office. We just had two introductory encounters so far. The first set the mood and established the party's backstory--one of their own, a member of The Company of the Crimson Bell, was killed by drow, his eyes plucked out and clenched in his dead hands. The second was an ogre/hill giant patrol just outside the steading as the party was doing reconnaissance.

The adventure proper should start in earnest in the next few weeks, and I will be posting about it at the Scramble.

As others have mentioned, conversion is pretty swift. Candidly, my biggest problem so far is cutting out some of the bloat in the original. OTOH, I am greatly looking forward to the big dining hall brawl. That scene was made for minions.

I could see how being too explicit might be troubling but simple conversions, giving creature replacements without going into full stat details, and describing how to handle certain traps in the 4E way, and even handling skill challenges, shoudln't be a problem as that stuff all gets discussed in far greater detail in other threads on these boards. Remember, these adventure conversions aren't meant to replace the original in their entirety, nor the rulebooks, just to explain how to handle the various mechanical changes that allow the adventure to be run in this alternate system or edition.

As a way to feed the fires, if anyone has any thoughts on converting the Cooperative Dungeons please do make some notes in this thread. Since they were first conceived and created through EN World by EN Worlders, and they are free, I think this would be a very appropriate use of this additional thread.

These free adventure archives and the cliffhangers and random encounters on WotC would probably be good conversion fodder, as well, provided we link to the original and only add the notes here (allowing people to get the full text from WotC).

Hrm... I'll have to take another look. Using my adventure notes, I could probably come up with something like this pretty quickly for Forge of Fury, The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, the Village of Hommlet and most of the Isle of Dread.

So out of curiosity, Mark, are you collecting 4E conversions for any particular purpose?

Cool. Those would all be useful to a lot of people, IMO.

No particular reason. I just thought a nice clearing house thread with some ground rules so things don't get lost in the mix up between simple legal conversions kept here and what seems to be a growing concern over C&D letters as well as links to illegal sites and downloads. I figure if this all happens in one thread people can help one another stay on the legal side of the line while creating a hugely valuable resource for EN Worlders. Good for all and a win/win/win/win. :)

That's cool.

Alright... First question...

I don't have my notes with right now, but most of my conversions would look something like:

AREA 1
Encounter: 5 Vicious Monsters (MM, p. 123), 1 Death Trap (DMG, p. 45).
Treasure: 67 gp, The Fizbin of Misfortune (PHB, p 89).

Piece of cake. No problem. A simple listing and reference to the page of the Core Rules that the stats are listed on. I'm pretty certain that avoids any legal entanglements.

The question is, what do I do when I have a monster, trap or magic item that is either A) from the core rules book but modified or B) wholly new and built from scratch?
