The question is, what do I do when I have a monster, trap or magic item that is either A) from the core rules book but modified or B) wholly new and built from scratch?

You post it? Else it will be one hell of a guessing game to figure out what a Fireborn Shaman Orc can do. ;)

A simple listing and reference to the page of the Core Rules that the stats are listed on. I'm pretty certain that avoids any legal entanglements.

That seems like it should be just fine.

I would guess as above but with an additional line about the adjustment, such as Remove fire resistance or Add Daily power: Pants drop! (with description of power if it is new).

(. . .) or B) wholly new and built from scratch?

With something else that is completely whole cloth, I would guess that keeping the formatting simple and understandable, avoiding trying to overly-emulate any tradedress (don't attach a PDF that is meant to mimic a page from a WotC book, for example), should keep the thread and EN World in safe waters.

If anything comes too close to the line, we'll just not post it or allow a mod/admin to edit as they please. Certainly, a WotC employee can always report a post as necessary if something is beyond allowed but I am not a fan of the idea that it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission because, IME, often there is already damage done by that point as well as hurt feelings. We'll just try to stay out in front on doing this fairly and correctly and legally right from the get-go.

Good questions and thanks! :)

I think you are taking way too many precautions.

Well, for this thread we'll go with those precautions and feel free to start up another thread that plays fast and loose with WotC IP. It'd be interesting to see where the middle ground turns out to be.

Ever since 4e came out, I've been sorely tempted to do a conversion of "The Speaker of Dreams". It would be very easy with 4e.

Although I don't think that module was all that popular.

The party won't gain more than four levels over the course of the module? Are you sure about your math on that?

Well, if they gain more, that's good, he's a L20 solo. But I'm doing the mid-sized campaign version, where they don't need to destroy the fanes to defeat him. This is just a breather from my homebrew, so a few months long is good enough.

And they're almost done with the first section in the village and have yet to gain a level, so it's more like I'm hoping they're at least L15 by the end....

I think there is room for all levels of popularity in this conversion effort. Plus, we can add a link to a source of inexpensive copies for adventures such as this -

[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Speaker-Dungeons-Dragons-Roleplaying-Adventure/dp/0786918306]Amazon.com: The Speaker in Dreams[/ame]

This will make it easy on people to have lots of inexpensive options and a vast variety of choices when setting up their campaigns.

Speaker in Dreams Conversion

Its not a great conversion, but I learned a good bit from it. It also transplants the plot to the town of fallcrest from the DMG.

Thanks! I think to be on the safe side, you'd need to remove the directly copied box text, perhaps just makes notes where someone should substitute a town name, and the map that is lifted is a definite no-no under the current situation. Any place where a stat block is a complete reprint would need to be removed, I think, and replaced by a line referencing where to find it, such as see MM pg XX, though any stat blocks you constructed yourself should be fine enough, I guess. Otherwise, I do not think there should be problems with this. The alternative, I think, is that a mod/admin will simply come by a remove the link which does no one any good.

Hum, where does one go to find 4e adventure conversions? I checked the downloads section here at ENWorld and also the fan creation forum. So far, I haven't been able to find a single conversion.

Is there some popular place that folks are posting conversions?

Thanks.
