Converting a Cleric

I want to make a Cleric of Wee Jas who, during the campaign, will convert to Heironeous. Is this ever explored in a Splat book, if not then how would you rule this? I think it is a bit strange for him to go to sleep a Cleric of Wee Jas and wake up a Cleric of Heironeous...

Well, it doesn't usually happen overnight. :)

Typically your Cleric would have to have a falling out with his or her patron deity, and effectively lose their Clerical abilities for a time.

Then follows a bit of soul searching, and finding a new path.

I'm a little confused.
You want to create a character whose goal in life is to lose his faith?

Seems like you'd just pick Heironeous in the first place.

Anyway. Thread continues.

Changing deities is the *Player's* goal for the character, not the character's goal.

It can be played out as an angsty, tormented soul moment, and make excellent story.

Or, it could be a cold blooded plan by a player to discard one set of domains and domain powers once the character has outgrown them, and trade them in for a set that's still under warranty.

Either way, it's up to his DM.

Well your cleric will probably have a crisis of faith or do something that Wee Jas directly opposes. You'll fall and fall hard. After the soul searching, you'll find your way to Heironious. You'll learn the faith and be welcomed into the faith. At last you'll find what you've been missing all your life and only then can you truly start living!

And for the crunchy mechanic bits, you'll need an Atonement from a cleric of your new religion. They'll also probably give you a quest of some sort too.

You could also adopt a second deity that you come to revere over time, without necessarily having to reject your original. The closer the two deities are in relationship, portfolio and overall attitude, the smoother this could be.

Can you think of a common thread? Could the DM design part of the campaign that involve the churches of both groups?

You're going from Lawful Neutral to Lawful Good. Some possible overlaps might be in the area of Law, War and/or death. Should there be an event that would bring together the churches of both gods on a mutual purpose, you might develop respect for the other god without automatically rejecting your original.

A player in one of my games played a Favored Soul of Kord. Cool character. He died early in our game, and was Reincarnated by a Trent Druid as a Woodling. This Favored Soul never lost his devotion to Kord, but developed a respect for Obad-Hai, overlap was the realm of Hunting, Freedom, Combat, Strength. Later in the campaign, the church of Kord allied with withe Church of Bahamut to oppose a scheme of Tiamat. Kord's well known as a dragon hunter. Another player, a Warblade/Crusader who revered Kord, underwent the ritual of becoming a Dragonborn. The Favored Soul also developed a respect for Bahamut, while never diverting from his loyalty to Kord.

If I'm not mistaken, 2ed Forgotten Realms had some sort of rule in place for specialty priests who opted to change religions... something to the effect of losing half their xp, or levels, or one level... can't remember off-hand.

Mind you, XP was easier to come by in 2ed... especially if you didn't mind raiding Elf towns. ;)

Thanks RUMBLETIGER, that's what I wanted, I don't want to have a party of five players four of them level 4-5 and one with no levels who is basically just following them around doing nothing.
