According to the original text, it's a flat, roughly square shape 10 ft on a side, with 6 ft long pseudopods. Going with a cloaker for comparison, I'd just guess about 200-250 lb (scaling up their area and figuring they're a bit thicker than cloaker wings).

That seems very light. It'd have to be about half an inch thick if it's as dense as normal flesh.

I suppose it could be filled with "levitating gas" like some interpretations of the beholder, which would excuse us from making it a foot or more thick and still weigh very little.

As I said before, it doesn't feel right to me to have this thing speak.

On the other side, the doorway passes into a kennel of creatures known as hgaun. The product of some wizard's experimentation here on the Elemental Plane of Air, hgaun possess the bodies of medium-sized dogs, birdlike heads with multifaceted eyes, and feathered wings just large enough to allow them to get airborne. The doorway is in the back of the kennel, between two infrequently used cages, and appears to be made of msted iron on the kennel side.

The appearance of the PCs causes the hgaun to bark (a high pitched sort of squawking sound), but since they are in cages, the creatures pose no threat-which they wouldn't in any case, since they are domesticated creatures used for hunting on this plane.

Hgaun AC 6; Mv 12, Fl 18 (C); HD 2+1; hp 10 each; THAC0 19; #AT 1; Dmg 1d4 (bite); SD immune to illusions, gaze attacks, and other vision-related attacks; SZ S (4’ long); ML steady (12); Int animal (1); AL N; XP 175.

Originally appeared in Tales from the Infinite Staircase (1998).

Magical beast? Sort of a mini-griffon?

Dog: Str 13, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6

Reducing a griffon to Small yields...
Str 6, Dex 19, Con 10, Int 5, Wis 13, Cha 8

These are no smarter than a dog, so we can probably reuse the mental stats. In fact, we can probably just use all the dog's stats, unless we want to reduce Str a tad (like a griffon vs. a lion).

AC translates to 14. Dogs are AC 15. I'd think these should have an AC at least as good as a dog, if not slightly better from the magical experimentation. A dog has +1 nat armor, a Small griffon would have +4. Maybe Dex 17, +2 natural?

Summarizing...
Str 11, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6, +2 natural?

An AD&D War Dog (roughly equal to a Riding Dog in 3E) has the same AC but 1 point better HD (2+2 instead of 2+1).

An AD&D Wild Dog (roughly equal to a 3E Dog) is also size S and has the same bite damage as a Hgaun.

Hmm...

I would rather keep the Strength and Dexterity the same as the Dog and cut the Constitution. Birds tend to be a bit more delicate than dogs.

Make the NA +2 so they have AC 16 like a Riding Dog.

A griffon has better Con than both a lion and a giant eagle, so I'd rather stick wth the higher Con precedent of "blending".

So blending your stats with my Con...

Str 13, Dex 17, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6, +2 natural

Acceptable?
