Convince me to buy Urban Arcana!

Biohazard

First Post
I keep flirting with this book but I haven't made a commitment to her yet. Why should I buy Urban Arcana? Talk me into it!

My one fear is that it's a half-baked D&D retread...I also detest the "Fantasy Fast Food" adventure in the back...

But I want to want this book, if that makes any sense. Convince me. Begin.

Talk me into it!

"Biohazard? This is your mom... Takyris and his friends have got me locked in a... I can't say? I'm safe, that's what's important, sweetie... and I'll stay safe just as long as you buy Urban Arcana... Please buy Urban Arcana, Biohazard... Takyris has promised that if you do, I won't be hurt... but if you don't, I'm af-- (click)"

Your mom is a very special woman, Biohazard. I'd hate for anything to happen to her. If I were you, I'd get down to your FLGS real soon now, get your copy, and then post a scanned receipt in this thread by, say, noon tomorrow. At that point, your mother will be released completely unharmed.

Helping sales all around,

I'm not going to talk you into buying the book. That's your preference.

If you want to run a modern fantasy campaign resembling Shadowrun (or a horror campaign similar to Buffy, Angel, Ghostbuster, etc.) then give the book more than a look-see.

Otherwise, look elsewhere. For example, if you want a special force/military campaign, pick up Somalia: d20.

That it is.

You don't want this book. About the only thing useful in it is the equipment chapter. Well, the parts of the equipment chapter that aren't copy&pasted out of the Player's Handbook.

I thought the advanced/prestige classes were pretty neat.

And the players in my Shadow Chasers game have been digging the new spells and psionic abilities.

Should you buy it? Depends on what you're running.

It is. I got the book as a birthday present. Someone assumed I might like because I'm totally into Charmed. Let me just say this...think Amazing Engine [Magitech] meets Mage: The Ascension. [Sotto voce]: yeah...

I'd say to buy it, but not if all you're interested in is the equipment that should have been in the core rulebook. If you're interested in magical version of most of the advanced and prestige classes from MPC vol. 2, then i'd buy it, maybe. It's up to you, but you have to remember, it is D&D Modern. But, it does have some great stuff in it, but you have to want it. The Equipment Chapter is great, and although not a realistic as the UMF selection, the ammunition rules are great as well. Although, there are some serious problems with the vehicle descriptions, they have all been corrected.

so, it's up to you, but I do recommend part no matter the campaign, and if you want to run psionics or magic in the "real" world, then this is the book to do it, or a nice crossover campaign.
