Core Only Gish?

Heh. I just call them what they are, i.e. fighter-mage, warrior-mage, or somesuch.

I can certainly see the appeal of a concise term, but Gish just sounds so darn stupid (and is technically the wrong term, of course). ;)

What exactly is 'gish'? I see this term too often and can't seem to pin down context. Is it a term for power or flexibility?

It was originally the term for the fighter/wizards of the githyanki. (Or possibly the githzeri, I can't remember which right now. ^_^ )

It has since been generalized to mean any fighter/mage build, but technically you'd have to play a githyanki to be a "real" gish, thus Thanee's comment.

What about the parts of Unearthed Arcana that are in the SRD (variant classes, racial paragon classes, and the like)?

Will you be limited to PHB spells, or will you be able to use the Spell Compendium and other books (PHBII, Complete Mage)?

Edit: Also, alignment restrictions, or no?

A decent core-only gish is Ftr 1/Wiz 6/EK 8

+12 BAB, 13th lvl wiz casting, saves 10/5/8, and 2 bonus fighter feats (Power Attack+Improved Initiative)

Alternatively, Bard 16/Ftr 4 (eventually) nets a +16 BAB and 6th level Bard spells. At your level I'd go Bard 13/ftr 2.

Either way...just my 2 cp
Didn't really think it through, but what about a Pal4/Sorc6/EK5 with Arcane Strike? You'll have a good BAB, can use Divine Might and a maxxed out CHA will boost your saves as well as your damage. Disadvantage: No level 9 spells at level 20. And no mount yet.

A 'gish' is a multiclassed Githyanki, as stated in the Monster Manuel under the Githyanki entry. As starwed stated, the term has evolved to include any warrior/caster type.

Well, the OP didn't state the character's race, so perhaps s/he is a Githyanki...

Neither Arcane Strike or Divine Might are core and you're only casting 5th level spells at 15th level.

However, Pal 2/Sor 6/EK 7 is a great core only build.

+12 BAB, saves 10/4/7 + Cha, 12th lvl Sor casting, and 1 bonus Ftr feat.

Since we only have four players I feel the need to cover more than one base.
Do you know exactly which bases you need to cover yet? That would help narrow down what sort of build makes sense here.

When thanee asked if non-PHB races were allowed, the answer was no, thus...

It is, I believe, one of the silliest elements of popular online D&D jargon ever.
