Core Only Gish?

I'm confused assuming core SRD casting still spell on everything means using full round casting and sacrificing higher spell slots. Considering that you will lack 7th or 8th level spells (which a single classed wizard will have at 15th level) it seems that you are sacrificing a good amount of spell power.

In contrast the Paladin 2/Wizard 5(Specialist)/ Eldritch Knight 8 has access to 7th level spells and has a better BaB.

On the BAB front:

Pal 2 = +2
Wiz 5 = +2
EdK 8 = +8
Total +12

vs.

Pal 2 = +2
Sor 6 = +3
EdK 7 = +7
Total +12

So that's the same.

And with still spell you can wear full plate and have a shield. While mounted, having to use a full-round action vs. a standard action isn't a huge difference, since you're relying on your mount to move you. And I'm fond of being able to metamagic. It's not a huge advantage, but I like the flexibility. And at this level, you have a caster level of 12 either way, so both the sorcerer and wizard build get 6th level spells. Plus sorcerer is more synergistic with paladin, since both are Charisma-based classes.

It's not like you need Still Spell... with a level of Spell Sword thrown in and a twilight mithril armor, you can reduce ASF quite a lot.

And why should the BAB be different? ;)

Heh, so much for my skills at adding correctly :o

But as Rangerwicket points out SRD only makes it kinda hard to reduce some of the ASF penalties.

I'm not sure the mounted caster is the best strategy though, I might be tempted to go with Polymorph to Annis Hag, buff the character up and then begin bashing.

Neither Arcane Strike or Divine Might are core and you're only casting 5th level spells at 15th level.

However, Pal 2/Sor 6/EK 7 is a great core only build.

+12 BAB, saves 10/4/7 + Cha, 12th lvl Sor casting, and 1 bonus Ftr feat.
Sorry, got carried away by a TWF build with these two feats ;)

It's horribly expensive since you need to waste 2 5-level spells and one turn attempt per round, but wohooo the damage and the to hit bonuses...

Hmm, the sacred exorcist class that allowed a pally/sor to raise his sorcerer spellcasting together with all the paladin abilities doesn't exist anymore, right ;)? Ah well... not core either. UA doesn't count either though it's in the SRD, right?

Hmm. Core fightermage. Why don't you go the good old bbn2/bardX route? Extra Rage, lotsa damage with high strength and many nice buff spells plus singing?

Spellsword is not in the SRD. And the SRD is not synonymous with Core Rules; much of the SRD material is not at all in the Core Rules, as the Core Rules are only what's in the PHB, DMG, and MM (most parts of which are reprinted in the SRD). The SRD includes a lot of non-core material as well, taken piecemeal from various rulebooks, it just includes all of WotC's Open Game Content.

Thanks for the replies all, you've given me a lot of help. I appreciate it.

Sadly the GM didn't bother to inform me until after I'd been posting plans and asking for critiques for four days that the fighter slot was already taken and I needed to build a healmonkey.

In retaliation I used his own ruling that players could have animals only if they paid for them to produce a (non-serious) build of a Druid who had something like 30 assorted spider-eaters, pegasi, and griffons under his command and portable holes+bottles of air so that, should the tunnels be too small, the gnome druid could simply put all the beasts in portable holes and carry them along, with bottles of air so they don't suffocate. :]

We'll see what his reaction is later.
