Just what the setting needs, more deities.

No, not more deities. He has been around for quite a while, even in GH.

You did see the comment about no one knowing who those deities are, right? Virtually no one has heard of them.

Yes, you said "no one". Which isn't true. I doubt that even "virtually no one" is true.

Not while WotC believes most dwarves are LG.

They should get their facts straight, then.

How would you do it better? I'm serious -- I'm struck with the same problem in world design, and I'd like thoughts on this.
A better way? For me, a better way would be to not have one, but at least a handful. The other would be to not have one that just has nearly all paladin stereotypes in the description. Greyhawk had this with Heironeous favoring a battle axe, plus was mostly an ethnic (Oeridian) deity, for instance. On top of that, thrown in were St. Cuthbert, Pholtus, Mayaheine (later iterations of the setting), Al'Akbar.

I'm curious as to why people always complain about the number of gods in D&D settings. How many gods did the Romans have? The Greeks? How many existed simultaneously across Europe in antiquity? The complaint about their being too many gods in Greyhawk or the Forgotten Realms is kinda silly after comparing them to the numbers on Earth.

I imagine that it's because so many people are also bent on the thought of deities being near omnipotent or at least all powerful within their portfolio. Which doesn't leave too much room for 2 gods of fire, gods of war, etc.

Me, I picture deities like utilities. The next state over, they may still use the same phone service but possibly different power & gas, etc.

Well, it's official - Moradin's OUT. About friggin' time, if you ask me.

In any case, don't expect round fourteen to show up until boxing day, or maybe even the 27th,depending on how my laptop's feeling (wireless can be a bit tricky at my girlfriend's house).

I'm one of those 'Gods = Omnipotent Personification of their Ideal (Not Just Mortals Plus)' folks. Way I do it is that even if guys in State A worship God o' War and guys in State B worship Different God o' War, they're secretly actually the same god in the end. Doesn't matter if the precepts on the faith are different or contradictory, ultimately, same god. It's just that the people worshiping him never clue in for fear that it might blow their minds. Anyone who goes around actually professing the fact usually ends up labeled a heretic in short order.
