Cosmopolitan - did this change in PGtF and how?

Did WotC need to take away a feat that gave access to a new class skill?

  • Yes, it was overpowered/broken/a generally bad idea

If you're looking for a feat that allows you to be good at a skill without risking abuse for prestige class purposes, try the following home brew feat:

Outside Study [general]
You've spent some effort to learn about something not normally studied by folk like you, though your understanding is less detailed than that of others.

Benefit: Choose one skill. Treat all cross class points in that skill as if they were not cross class for purposes of skill checks using that skill.

Example: Bob the 12th level wizard has 6 cross class ranks in the jump skill and 2 cross class ranks in the tumble skill. He selects this feat and chooses the jump skill. For purposes of making jump skill checks, he is treated as if he has 6 ranks in jump. He does not receive a synergy bonus to tumble checks because he has 6 cross class points in jump, not 6 ranks in tumble. He may not qualify for a prestie class that requires 6 ranks of tumble because he has 6 cross class points in tumble, not 6 ranks in tumble.

Special: You may not select this feat for a particular skill if you have more than 6 cross class ranks in that skill. [Note: This is more of a flavor issue to prevent a sudden leap in power with regards to a skill if this feat is taken at high level].

I am considering introducing a suite of feats into my campaign that would allow the beneficiary to treat two related skills (that can both be used untrained) as always class skills, sort of how the +2/+2 skill boosting feats work. The Versatile feat is OK, but the "choose two skills" seems a little wonky.

For example:

Agility: Balance and Climb are always class skills.
Sneakiness: Hide and Move Silently are always class skills.
Vigilance: Listen and Spot are always class skills.

So like:

Arcane Education (knowledge (arcarna) & spellcraft)
Relgious Education (knowledge (religion) & concentration)

Except those are all (except for concentration) trained only. Why the restriction to untrained usable skills Garnfellow?

My thinking is that "trained only" skills generally require a serious commitment by the recipient (ie class levels) and aptitude (ie decent ability scores) to learn. You can't just pick up a smattering of spellcraft lore on the street. The untrained skills, though, are something that just about anybody, regardless of class or ability score, should be able to focus on if they wanted to.

Yes, the region list is expanded a little bit I believe.

It now only grants +2 bonus to Bluff, Gather Info, and Sense Motive. No more free class skill.

DRAT!!!! The best thing about that feat was that it let you qualify for PrCs quicker by taking one class rather than taking two. For example, the Duelist needed to have a decent BAB and a rather high level of Tumble. As a straight up Fighter you'd have to pump skill points into a cross class skill or take a few levels of Rogue or Bard to get the needed Tumble level. With Cosmopolitan you could take the feat so that your Fighter had Tumble as a class skill. Somehow I think my group is going to keep the old feat. Did they include any new feats that let you claim a cross class skill as a class skill? If not I'll be very disappointed.

They did not include another feat that makes a skill cross class.

Education [Regional]

Makes all knowledge skills class skill and gives a +2 bonus to all checks with two knowledge skills.

Pretty sure that's it however.

IIRC Rokugan Settings book has the Versatile feat which allows two non-class skills to be treated like class skills...

Question: Are any of the following:
- Versatile
- Skill Prodigy
- Talented

Open Gaming Content? Can someone post a full description?

Skill Prodigy is not OGC, but there's the description in the update sheets for 3.5...

This feat lets you choose a number of cross-class skills equal to your intelligence modifier as class skills... blabla, not speak languages...
