Costs of upgrading

Hey all.

What do you all think will be the costs of upgrading to 4th:

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?
2) Do you plan on upgrading?
3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?
4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?
5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?

1) $29.99
2) No (but I will buy the new core rule books for ideas to port into my 3.5e game)
3) No
4) I always keep my books
5) I presume you mean once 4e is out. On e-bay, I'd say that if you pay more than 1/4 the cover price of a 3.5 book, you've been had (unless, of course, 4e is a total flop and the majority stick with 3.5, but this is highly unlikely)

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?

I'm thinking about $40

2) Do you plan on upgrading?

Most likely. I've got some major gripes with 3.5 anyway, but I want to read over the core books before deciding to transfer to 4e.

3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?

Irrelevant. Money spent is water under the bridge in this case. Its not like gaming books keep their value anyway. Its more like buying a car, its value drops as soon as you leave the store. So this really doesn't effect my decision.

4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?

Storage. I've got a plastic storage bucket with their name on it.

5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?

Probably, but not by WotC.

1. Don't really care. Less than $50.
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. Keep them.
5. No official discount but you can already get 3.5 stuff fairly cheap on places like ebay.

Regarding worth, I don't really understand some of the comments here. How do you define "worth"? We are really talking about the value of "fun". If I enjoy the new system more than the current one, wouldn't that be enough to make the cost of the new books "worth it"?

1) How much do you think the new books will run for? 40 bucks.

2) Do you plan on upgrading? I'll buy the core books, but my group (myself included) is pretty adamanet about staying with 3.5. I may make a few house rule chances with stuff I find in the core 4.0 core books, but that's about it. I have WAY too much invested in 3.5 to warrent a major change this soon. I'll wait for 5.0. My current campaign should be over by then.

3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade? Hell No.

4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade? Keep using them, obviously.

5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books? I doubt there will be any, except from stores trying to clear their 3.5 inventory.

1) I don't care what the price is. I'd hazard in $35 to $45 dollar range

2) I'll not be upgrading. If I need to create a character for someone else's game, I'll use the 4e SRD.

3) There is no way, it can be worthwhile for me to upgrade.

4) Irrelevant question for me.

5) Dunno. Wait 12 months and you could get them very much cheaper indeed. Especially if you consider used books. I'd say probably about $10 or less for the common stuff.

1) Here in the UK I'd expect about £15 to £20 each, less through discount/online retailers. The 3.5 PHB is currently £11.29 on Amazon UK, but my nearest FLGS is asking £16.99

2) Yes. I'll at least buy the PHB, and assuming I like it I'll buy other 4e books.

3) Yes. I've spent loads on 3.5 but gaming gives me excellent value for money as a source of entertainment, and I'll still have all my older books once 4e releases.

4) Keep them.

5) None. WOTC will stop producing them. Retailers may discount to get rid of them to make way for 4e products. It doesn't really matter to me as I have all the 3.5 material I could ever want.

I think the books will be $29.99 for the first print run, but going up to 34.99 or 39.99 afterwards, similarly to how they handled 3rd Edition.

I meant worth how ever each of define it. I don't think it is worth it in terms of money, or in terms of my campaign, esp. since WotC has suggested that ppl wind up their current campaigns and restart with 4e. I'm not a fan of that at all.

Sorry that I didn't explain that I was being vague about "worth" (ok, does that make sense?).

I hope this thread gets archived so that, in eight years when 5th edition is announced, we can look at this thread and show everyone how many folks said they wouldn't convert, and then did. It was the same way with 3rd edition; tons said they would never convert, they had spent too much money on 2e, and so on. Most of them converted.

1) I am guessing about $30.00US
2) I plan on getting them as they are available, but whether or not I *upgrade* depends on if the rest of my gaming group is willing to do the same.
3) If the system is better, then yes. And better CAN mean 'different'.
4) I will probably keep them. If my group full converts to 4E then I may sell them on EBay. People will buy them!
5) Ahhh... None? Why would they? It's not like you're trading in an old car or something.
