Costs of upgrading

I'll go out on a limb here and say the core books will go for $40 each, with all following material going for $50 a pop.

Interesting... I would say the opposite. I can see it going for $40, but I'd think the follow up would be less, like $30.00. That's how the 3.5 Complete and Race books work, no?

1) How much do you think the new books will run for?
2) Do you plan on upgrading?
3) Depending on the amount of money you spent on 3.5, do you think it will be worth it to upgrade?
4) What are you going to do with your 3.5 books if you do upgrade?
5) Finally, what kind of discount do you think will be given on 3.5 books?

1. Like other posters, I am guessing $30 each, and from what I vaguely recall, they are in the 160 page format.
2. I don't consider it an upgrade, I am eyeballing it as a new game until I see it. I plan on getting it and playing it, but I won't stop my AoW campaign in the 9th adventure just to upgrade. They are also saying, NOT to try to upgrade your current PCs, but to simply start fresh with new ones.
3. I will buy it like I buy any new game.
4. I will keep them :) I have a TON of material and since I buy a lot of adventures, I can reuse them easily.
5. I think you will start finding 3.5 books for sale here on enworld and on amazon at this time next year. But existing books (ie inventory) won't really be on sale, though I hope they drop the prices of the current 3.5 PDFs in half at least.

1. Probably what they do now.
2. I'm probably going to wait. My group isn't going to change over straight away. So there's no hurry. Plus it looks like a nearly all or nothing change.
3. Because of the changes to monsters, you've probably got to get the MM and PHB. And if your favorite classes and races arn't in PHB1 , you've going to get PHB2. Plus if your a realms fan, you've going to need the need realms handbook. So thats at least three books, to start. Plus the $10 a month for the insider. So I might wait for 5th Edition to come out in 2011, and buy the 4th ed stuff cheap.
4. If i've upgraded, then its because I can find 4e games, so I won't need the 3.5 books. I'll keep my FR books, though as they're more fluff.
5. Hopefully i'll by able to buy some 3.5 books on the cheap now. :)

All my speculations are in US dollars.

I'm guessing the PHB might list at $29.99 for the first run, to encourage people to buy. Since there will probably be a nominal fee for accessing the online content, they'll make up the difference quickly.

I'd think that the MM and DMG will sell for full list (maybe $39.99).

I plan to pick up the new books as they come out, and feel bad about the mistakes, and end up buying second run fixes when they come out.

;)

I hope this thread gets archived so that, in eight years when 5th edition is announced, we can look at this thread and show everyone how many folks said they wouldn't convert, and then did. It was the same way with 3rd edition; tons said they would never convert, they had spent too much money on 2e, and so on. Most of them converted.

I hope so too, though I doubt that'll still be visiting these boards at that time.
I was one of the people that stopped playing 2E midway through it's run (and started playing DC Heroes and Champions) and was actively looking forward to 3E. I donated alot of my 1E & 2E stuff to my local library due to space concerns. It's not the same with 4E. I'm looking at my shelves of 3.5 stuff that I still plan on using and stuff that I havent gotten to use and I'm thinking in 2 years how easy will it be for me to find players for 3.5?

So I'm glad that in a few years you get to feel vindicated by looking at the people who have honest concerns about upgrading and those of us who arent excited about the upgrade so that you can go "see I told you, all that talk and they still caved".

I'm telling you unless 4E in some way allows me to still use my 3.5 material, I'm not upgrading, you can take my word for it or you can call me a liar.

You may be right.

...But on the other hand, we had (comparitively) very few pre-published adventures to run for 2E, and very few mega-adventures (I think there were about 4-5). For 3.5E, I have about 125 adventures I still want to run....

Also, we have really only had 4 years to play 3.5. We had 11 years to play 2E.
