Coup de grace

Actually, he is masterful. And at some point, this undead situation was going to come about because it's part of the story and campaign that he has planned and will ultimately lead to something. What, I can only imagine but definately some good things, I just can't elaborate much more as this story may become a story hour someday and it is as good if not better then Destans Sins campaign where I played Raylin. The situation is that he is not totally undead but kind of a mixture of half human, half undead with some big pros and some cons. It's a combination of things that is part of Ryan's home brewed system additions which is awesome. However, in this world, raise dead and true resurrection spells are VERY hard to find. The situation dictated what happened and it will add some very good stuff for awhile. At this point though, the characters main goal is to find access to a true raise dead or resurrection if possible because to a degree, he hates that which he has become and strived to fight against. It's a very interesting twist and will lead to future quests. Believe me, our campaigns are based on very mature themes and morals and it may not be for everyone. However, it is for me and Destan is the best at throwing major situations that test you beyond belief with tons of twists. Great stuff though and thanks once again to all. Sorry my stuff doesn't post right but I'm not a writer, nor do I intend to be and all the math should not have added up, I was just trying to get to the question at hand with a very quick synapsis.

Despite the fact that Infiniti2000 has hurt my feelings, I thought this topic was worthy of discussion. To be honest, I'm not sure whether I made a bonehead move or not. If we judge gaming by the amount of enjoyment we have - and I think that's the best metric to use - then perhaps I was wrong in my decision to CDG a PC. I dunno.

I posted the question on the general forum, since it looks like rules-wise we were OK:

My apologies for that, but I call 'em like I see 'em. I tried not to be too harsh, though, as I agree that the main priority is fun. For the second part, turning the PC into an undead creature, this is very tricky from a number of perspectives. If should it be a bonehead move, however, your willingness to discuss it far overshadows any boneheadedness about it. In other words, you'll most likely be okay in the end. I'll look at the other thread. :)

The "turning a PC into an undead creature" is a whole different ball of wax, but that's entirely campaign-driven. The player had (and still has) the option to bring in another, more "lively" character should he not like the undead thing. It's basically a "half-dead" template. Probably unbalanced, but I'm fairly comfortable and consistent when it comes to making mechanics-related mistakes. :)

I respect your opinion, I just don't share it. It's all good. I suspect more groups would prefer a non-CDG move there than those that are OK with it. To each his own!

hmmm... Since its a full round action (not just a full attack action) should your buddy have gotten another swing at the guy besides the AoO? If I was feeling like a particularly nice DM, I think I would have offered to let him take the "aid another" combat action to make you un-coup-able for the round, especially since that was his stated purpose in moving into your square. (If someone says "I take mechanical action X to accomplish tactical goal Y" I like to establish whether it actually has a chance of accomplishing said goal before they do it. This is the only place I would say your DM erred.)

No. Charge is a full round action. Loading a heavy crossbow is a full round action. Spontaneously casting Empowered Cure Light Wounds is a full round action. Coup de grace is a full round action.

All of them begin and end in your own turn. None of them are the same as casting a one round spell, which begins in your turn and ends just before your next turn.

Don't feel bad. I have noticed that when a player asks about a DM's actions on ENWorld, the response "The DM is a bonehead" always comes up. Even when it's not true.

I don't think, as a DM, I would have gone for the CDG in this case (and, yes, I've read Destin's posts in his other thread on this) but that's a question of monsters deciding on their own tactics and making different decisions.

But I would like to interject that we now know about how to better defend a PC against CDG. Instead of trying to just get an AoO on them when they try the CDG, suck up an AoO yourself by trying to bullrush them away. If they have to move more than 5', they can't take the full action that CDG requires. And even if you can't move them that far, you still get a chance to AoO them when they try.
Bullrush, it's not just for pushing enemies over cliffs or into wells anymore. Use it to keep more vulnerable PCs from suffering full attacks.
