Coup de Gras question.

Power Attack with a coup de gras is Rules legal.

I personally think the methodical action of a CDG require more focus than would be capable with PA, but that is JMO.

Here is a reason I'm asking. I'm DMing Age of worms, allowing players access to the standard WotC Splatbooks and The Spell Compendium. The Spell Dragon Breath gives Paralysis as one of the options. So Wizard casts Dragon breath (and shares it with his familiar) proceeds to paralyze villian, so the Fighter can whip out his Heavy pick (x4 crit) power attack for full and often gets 100+ damage for the save.

I just read over on the Mutants and Masterminds boards a similar question. Power attack and Coup De Gras.

The answer was since there is no attack roll made for the coup, you can't get a damage bonus for reducing it.

I'm ok either way, cause even without the extra damage I'd still need a 20 to save against it. And, actually, I'm not sure the players would have survived the encounters anyway.

Age of Worms is NASTY tough.

Can you use Power Attack even if you don't have to roll the dice because you automatically hit and score a crit ?
You don't substract anything but add full BAB to damage (or twice with two-handed weapon). I'm not sure if this is legal.

Power Attack:
Benefit: On your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add the same number to all melee damage rolls. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The penalty on attacks and bonus on damage apply until your next turn.

So if you don't roll you don't substract and therefor you don't have anything to add to your damage.

Coup de Grace is a full round action with a melee weapon (or ranged), not an attack action.

But I don't think it would make a great difference if you allow this combo to work in your game.

Technically legit.

You have to decide before you make any attack rolls. If you make none, that's given.
You may choose to subtract a number from all melee attack rolls. Again, if you make none, that's given.
The same number (which you chose to subtract) is added to your melee damage rolls.

Coup de Grace is a full round action with a melee weapon (or ranged), not an attack action.

I havn't found Coup de Grace in the SRD (and can't get to my PHB right now)...

The question is... is a Coup de Grace a melee damage roll?

Yep. It's a normal attack with a melee weapon, or a bow or crossbow. The only differences are that it takes a full-round action, automatically hits, automatically deals critical and sneak attack damage (if any), and requires a Fort save to avoid dying.
