Are you allowed to make variant items other than the DMG suggests? Like instead of Gloves of Dex you make Boots of Dex and they're the same price? Any rules on the matter or on how to price different item slots?

Magic Item Compendium (page 234) has rules for putting the common item bonuses on different body slot items. For example, you can add Dex bonuses to Arms, Feet or Hands at no extra cost.
