Craft Wondrous Item

Yup, I ban it and all Craft feats that can craft permanent items. Of the Craft feats, only consumable item Craft feats are available.

I wouldn't like banning them from my game completely.

What I like though, is making it very difficult for a PC to finally make a wondrous item (or a sword, a wand, a shield etc. etc...)

The required materials can always be a nice hook for a sub-quest.

If you give your players plenty of money, and if you allow them to find the required materials once they reach a town, those craft feats can easily break the game.

Only problem is with robes...

Robe: Multiple effects

You can put whatever you want on a robe without the extra 50% :erm:
Good thing, too! My bathrobe-- with the embroidered unicorn, the chili and mustard stains, the tire tread marks, and the blood spatters-- would be prohibitively expensive, otherwise.

Yah, but you can either wear a Robe or Armor, but the magic effects of both won't work.

You also need to remember that it takes 1000 gp per day of crafting. If you, as a DM, allow your PCs to sit around and craft items, then you need to look at how you structure your campaign. Most games I'm in/run, the characters are always moving. Two weeks of downtime is a big deal and rare to come by. I typically tell my PCs that they can take Crafting feats, but they may not have a chance to use them. Most of the time the wizards (typical crafters) are spending their down time learning new spells and scribing them, which also takes up a good chunk of time.

We modified the various Craft skills a bit.

We added the various oils, salves etc. to Brew Potion, taking them out of Craft Wondrous.

Forge Ring became Forge Magical Jewelry, taking in all the amulets, rings, broaches, pendants and periapts, the Ioun Stones, etc.

This pared down the range of Craft Wondrous quite a bit, and I think it gave the feat some needed balance. As written, it's pretty much "Craft anything".

Add that "Craft Wondrous Item" also covers "Craft Wondrous Architecture" in Stronghod Builder's Guide, granting permanent spell effects to rooms such as beds that regrow lost limbs, bring back individuals from the dead if you place the right diamond alongside the body, permanent spider climb walls in a room, affect the weather for miles around, Speak with animals and plants in a certain area, permanent illusory terrain, permanent Unseen servants, platforms of floor that teleport or heal you when you step on them... just to name a few.

Good times. Insanely powerful feat. One of my favorites.
