Crafting Magic arms/armor in E6

I think i already have the answer to my question but i just want to make absolutely sure so i don't screw my players over.

Here is a section from the SRD,
" The creator’s caster level must be at least three times the enhancement bonus of the armor. If an item has both an enhancement bonus and a special ability, the higher of the two caster level requirements must be met."

It sounds like someone crafting magic armor/weapons can have a +2 weapon with up to +2 worth of Special Abilities. Am I right?

It's no +5 Vorpal yada yada yada but it's still pretty strong in E6 so i just wanted to triple check with you guys.


Also, is there any sort of caster level requirement for crafting items that give skill bonuses? if not it just seems crazy that if someone was willing to save up the gold they give make them selves a +40 to a skill item..

I believe the caster level only limits the enhancement bonus (the +1 or +2 to attack/damage)), not the effective level of the special abilities. Those are limited by individual caster levels, so I think you can put as many of them on a weapon as you like, so long as:

(0) the base magic weapon has at least a +1 enhancement bonus; and

(1) you have the requisite caster level and spells available for that special ability; and

(2) the sum of the enhancement bonus and effective special ability bonuses is not greater than +10.


That's my understanding of RAW, at least. Maybe someone can correct me?

i'm fairly certain the_orc_within nailed it, but i'd also like to mention that a +2 does not equate to +2 worth of "special abilities." your weapon could either be a straight +2 weapon, or it could be a +1 weapon, with a special ability worth +1 and no more.

for instance, "flaming" is equal to +1, as is "shocking", but since they're both +2 you couldn't have them, because a weapon HAS to be at least a plain old +1 weapon before piling on the goodies.

ie: +1 shocking sword is ok, but a +0 shocking flaming sword is illegal.
