Crafting

I was just looking at the Crafting rules, and a few things struck me as strange.

The progress per week is the target DC x the Skill check you rolled, if and only if you met the target DC. Results are measured in Silver Pieces. If you roll multiples of the target DC, you can reduce the time appropriately.

So look at something like Alchemical Acid, which has a price tag of 10 gp (100 sp), and a target DC of 15 to craft.

Suppose you roll just a 15 (the bare minimum needed). DC x Result is a minimum of 225 to succeed at all, which is over twice the value.

Alchemical fire is 20 gp (200 sp), with a DC of 20. So the minimum success needed results in 400 sp in progress, or half the time.

Sunrods are 2gp, DC 25. Minimum success gets 625 sp in progress on something that costs 20 sp. So that 1/31st of a week to make? How many minutes is that?

Thunderstones are 30 gp (300 sp), with minimum success at 625.

Composite Longbow has a price of 100 gp (1000 sp), and a minimum success of 225.

Now, by adding 10 to the DC you can cut the time in half. That bumps the minimum success result to 625, which is more than half way to the target price, so you've actually finished in one roll, cutting the time by over 75%, not by half. (At 225, you'd need 4 weeks and 3 days).

Not sure where I'm going with this, but the multiplicative factor seems weird.

But for you alchemists out there:

Thunderstones, Acid, and Fire take 3.5 days to make. Sunrods take 2 hours each. Tindertwigs are under an hour to make. Antitoxin takes a week per dose.

Composite longbows take a month unless you up the ante, in which case they take a week.

Yep, you're right. I somehow saw one thing and thought the other.

I wonder if it's possible/reasonable to raise the target DC by some other amount, to speed crafting?

SRD:Craft Skill - D&D Wiki

Quick Creation

You can voluntarily increase the DC of crafting an item by any multiple of 10. This allows you to create an item more quickly (since you will be multiplying this higher DC by your skill check result to determine progress). You must decide the increase to the DC before making the check.

I've made the mistake of trusting dndwiki a few times.

Special: A dwarf has a +2 racial bonus on Craft checks that are related to stone or metal, because dwarves are especially capable with stonework and metalwork.
A gnome has a +2 racial bonus on Craft (alchemy) checks because gnomes have sensitive noses.
You may voluntarily add +10 to the indicated DC to craft an item. This allows you to create the item more quickly (since you’ll be multiplying this higher DC by your Craft check result to determine progress). You must decide whether to increase the DC before you make each weekly or daily check.
