Crazed Substitute DM

If the group didn't want to restart, personally, I'd start a new campaign. My campaigns are my babies. Of course, I'd never let someone else run it in the first place, but again, its my baby.

Be honest. Tell them what really happened. If the sub-DM is one of your normal players, I'd take him aside beforehand to let him know this is what you plan on doing.

Then talk over options on how to save the campaign. I would have a list of brainstormed ideas before talking it over with the players. If they are agreeable to "rebooting" at the earlier level, go for it. Otherwise, you might be able to work out another solution. I agree keeping the rapid advancement isn't viable and I am guessing your players may have gotten that feeling too. Making sure they know you don't agree to letting it stand is important to do straight off.

Otherwise, it's your campaign. And your players. So work it out amongst yourselves.

As to what may happen to the sub's character ....
let's just say it will be less than wonderful. :]

Rest assured that this was not a serious threat. I have been playing this game since 1979 and know better than to work out personal disputes in game.
After consulting with my players it would seem that this set of characters will be cut loose from the main campaign. The sub offered to keep running an alternative session with no "holds barred, nothing to outragious" style gaming. (I think this was his goal from the first.)
As for my regular sessions, there was a great deal of interest in the Age of Worms and they are drawing up first level characters to start that in a few weeks. The nature of the adventure path should keep them out of mischief. I f I have to leave town again, they can always play the gonzo, out of control campaign.

So you are saying that he deliberately lied to you, and purposefully derailed your campaign?

He would be barred from my game on the spot for something like that.
