[Creative Exercise] Worlds in a word, planes in a paragraph

The Web: Massive strands of silken webbing interlace this twilight void. Smaller webs festoon each strand, or drift softly through the air. Spiders of all shapes and sizes hunt throughout the realm, devouring victims brought in by countless natural transient portals. Native areana sometimes rescue inadvertant travellers, ransoming them or demanding a period of servitude. Drow have recently found their way into The Web and established several powerful beachheads; some areana have become allies, while others seek to exterminate the invaders. What the drow are only starting to realize, however, is that humanoid creatures mutate in the arachnoid plane, and many susceptible drow have already become driders.

The Rail An enormous, multiplanar Lightning Rail and home to several small civilizations. The cars are generally about (in feet) 40W x 100L x 30H but some are larger or smaller. The rail seems to have a set course but it is so enormous that it is often on multiple planes at once. Sages theorize that the rail passes through every plane in existence, although it never stops to take on passengers.

Avalanche The steep, bitter, snowy mountain floats in mid-air, seemingly above nothing. Small villages crop up here and there and dissappear almost as quickly. The residents are quiet, as loud noises can lead to hundreds of deaths as entire settlements slide off the mountain.

The most common mistake visitors to Morrisull make regards the lowest of the low. Those people are not slaves, they are indentured servants.

I'm sad to say I had to read that twice before I got it. :)

What will all this creativity be used for? Just the amusement of ENW?

I once created and played in a setting which might use them - a Pirate Setting called the the Nine Seas is a realm where Nexus Portals and less stable Nexus Storms occasionally arise and allow travel between the Nine Seas, each of which is a different plane....

(it was based on the Pyrates computer game)

The Terraced City: Built on the side of a seemingly endless but shallow slope, this city is sharply divided into multiple sections. The farther down one goes, the more primitive and savage the roads and buildings become, until one reaches stone-age neighborhoods that are barely more than natural caves. Going up, the terraces become ever more advanced, reaching to the heights of a steam-punk renaissance and beyond. The original inhabitants of the city are long gone without a trace, however, and the various terraces are now occupied by peoples and races that seem to instinctively adapt, over the course of a single generation, to the tech level represented by the terrace on which they live.

Front Range Warlock
Tholdhar: A desolate landscape of crystaline mountains, Tholdhar is typified by its cold winds, copper sky, and ruined cities. The sole intelligent inhabitants of Tholdhar are a race of psychic arachnids, born from an apocalyptic holocaust that took place in aeons long since past. These monstrous spiders are part of a hive mind presided over by a bloated, misshapen, spider queen who hides within the world's core.

Pelargrir: After the illithids slew the sun this world was plunged into darkness and ice. Now, the inhabitants hold back the ice with a border of pylons of red hot iron. The heat is channeled from the last active volcano. The remaining free peoples desperatly search for a way to reignite their sun before the winterwight kings overwhelm the iron border.

Ma'Sagavin: Another world devistated by the illithids, this small world has a cool, alpine climate from equator to pole. During the day, the sky is a hazy silver-white; at night the sky is completely black. A great psionic shield* was erected around the plane shielding it from the terrible light of the sun. Now the illithids walk about on the surface taking slaves and bartering with the powerful demonic fifedoms and the alchemical-born red orcs.

Kashimir:
A plane of mathematical simplicity. A flat plain of polished alabaster with iscosolean pyramids of carnelian, lapis and jasper towering above. Onyx trails lead from pyramids to polished malachite domes, and insectile creatures of steel and brass pursue inscrutable goals.

* The implimentation of a wards major matrix fueled with the nuclear sacrifice of a city of 10,000. When he said he was going to destroy my world, I didn't think he meant it...

Talos is a world of organic minerals where juciy red rubies grow and droop down in delicious cluster, and sapphires fresh and bursting with life emerge from the fertile ground. The Common peoples of Talos are humanoid with skins of living copper, ruled over by the golden Auros and the beautiful Argent Mystics. Only the fierce and iron-hard Feros bring any blight to this pristine place of living metal and organic crystal...

FAERYAH: This world / plane borders the Plane of Faerie and it is where the denizens of Faerie are banished to following transgressions that are deemed far too serious and they themselves are deemed far too dangerous for the general populace of Faerie. It mirrors Faerie in many respects, except, it remains in perpetual twilight and its rivers and seas are in fact vessels of the blood of innocents killed across the multiverse and which is toxic to varying degrees to those that thrive in this plane. In addition to a vast variety of faerie, fey and varying versions of natural birds and beasts that thrive here, it is also home to the largest variety and collection of lycanthropes which are significantly enhanced in ability compared to their kin in other worlds and serve as the greatest source of terror and destruction. Arcane and elemental energies are easily tapped thus resulting in a world / plane that is volatile and erratic in nature due to the activities of its denizens.

Shimau What tragedy struck here is unknown. The civilizations here have collapsed, sometime within the last century by the look of things. Stay away from the cities, those people and animals that remain have become insane and feral. Animals... come to think it there don't seem to be any left... thats strange.

Brauncy A fairly normal, plane that shakes a bit. The ocean is a dark brown liquid that the inhabitants claim is a fairly strong stimulant. Don't drink too much, it dehydrates. Thankfully fresh water is abundant in various lakes and streams.

Edre A magical land where no one ever dies. At least, thats what they say. When a resident here knows that they are getting on in years they travel to the vast, glowing light field at the north pole. No one ever returns to say whats there.
