Creature by Poll #4 - Discuss our Fey!

I think the DR and natural armour, would be the other way round, however cold iron(iron made by hitting lumps of iron, with no fire) makes snese

Knight_Otu: Hey, not all gnomes have the +1 bonus to attacks against those creatures, just as not all elves can detect secret doors, not all dwarves have stonecunning, and not all halflings get a luckbonus to their saves, that doesn't mean that they do not belong to those subtypes... If we drop the attack bonus (which doesn't really make sense for something as inoffensive as a neutral plant-loving fey) we can still keep the other gnome traits, such as the ability to speak with animals (and plants and rocks in this case :p)...

Krishnath: I was saying it should have "some gnomish traits", not all. ;)
Ferret: I'm not sure if I understand your point? Are you more in favor of natural armor?

I guess it's time for a more detailed writeup.

The XXX are a small fey race somehow related to gnomes, tending the plants of the forest. Generally peaceful, they do act if something threatens their habitat.
A/n XXX appears as a gnome with moss for hair and green or brown eyes.

Combat
XXXs usually leave combat to their plant allies, but if necessary, they join combat with either their strange greening poison or their sickles.
Poison (Ex): Poison touch, DC 12, primary 1d4 dex, secondary creature becomes greenish and grows leaves.
Spell-like Abilities: At will - Diminish Growth, Obscuring Mist and Plant Growth; 3/day - Barkskin, Entangle, Goodberry, and Spike Growth. As a 5th level druid (DC: 13 plus spell level)
Summon Plants (Sp): Once per day, a/n XXX can summon a number of plant creatures, with a total HD of double the XXX's HD, with no creature having more than 1/3 the total in HD. These creatures remain for 1 hour, and cannot use their own summoning ability (if any) for 1 hour.
Gnome Traits: XXXs share a number of abilities with forest gnomes, as follows:
XXXs have the innate ability to pass without trace (as the spell).
+2 racial bonus to saving throws against illusions.
+4 dodge bonus against giants.
Speak with Nature (Ex): XXXs can freely talk to animals, plants and rocks, as the spells speak with animals, speak with plants and stone tell.
Tree Stride (Su): Three times per day, a/n XXX can duplicate the effects of the tree stride spell as cast by a druid of 5th level.
Skills: XXXs receive a +4 racial bonus to Hide checks, which improves to +8 in a wooded area. Also, XXXs receive a +2 racial bonus to Listen checks, for their keen hearing.

i don't think it needs the gnome subtype. plently of things are "like" other creatures, without being an actual part of them.

Well, personally I think it should have the gnome subtype, just because it is different, I mean how many fey have the elf subtype (none!) or how many orc are goblinoids (none again), or how many outsiders are giants (aside from the templated ones)? Come on, it will be fun and different.

Knight Otu: Of course, that was also what I said, just drop the attack bonus and we'll call it even, or something else :D

I like giving subtypes to creatures. Fey (gnome) is fine (by the way, could someone who has the new Fiend Folio tell me if they gave the (Gnome) subtype to the Spriggan ? Because they decided to make it a Fey, rather than a Humanoid), just like Outsider (Dwarf, Fire, Lawful) is fine for Azers.

Yes, Azers don't have the dwarf subtype in the MM. So what ? They should have it. :D

The draft seems fine for me. Low-light vision could be put inside gnome trait, though (that would give a shorter SQ line).

gez, IIRC the spriggan does not have a subtype. and i don't think that giving this fey a descriptor is a bad idea - in fact, if you want to do it just to be different, then you have my blessing. ;)
