Critical Effects: Critiques Wanted

The formatting appears to be messed up on the crit page (the first paragraph is pushed up and to the right of the table).

I like the table for hit location being separated from the rest of the text. Pet peeve: <2 should be 1-2, shouldn't it?

I hope there will be a final version of this system by Friday afternoon so I can use it in my next game. We had fun using the draft version last week... I'll post my results of this week's game to let you know how it worked out using your revised system.

You're doing a great job, Erica; keep it up! :D

Pfeh! I use Microsoft word to turn my documents into HTML, and it does that sometimes when a table and text meet. Ill fix it. :)

Thats supposed to mean "any result of 2 or lower" since the hit locations can now be adjusted to numbers less than 1 if the DM uses the optional attacker/defender size modifiers.

Glad you like it KK!! And unless anyone suggests more edits, this is as done as I can think to get it. Im still concerned about the healing rules. Any thoughts on that part?

Iz kewl I tink....

...but uh, I think the Fort save of DC 10 + the damage dealt is too severe.

I would suggest either have it equal the damage with no base or have it be 10 + the attacker's unmodified BAB.

Having thought things over, I cant help but agree with you. I am at school right now and have no access to my FTP to upload the changes to the page, but here is my idea:

The Fort Save DC will be based only on the original damage rolled, rather than the multiplied damage.

Thus, a dagger stab for 4 points of damage on a crit would have a Fort save of 12 (10 + original damage rolled).

In my previous example, the fighter doing 22 points of damage with his +2 sword would force a Fort save of 21 (10 +11) to resist the more lethal crit effects, whereas the dragon bite would have a Fort save of 34 (10 + 24).

Great idea!

And as a matter of fact, doing it this way solves two problems at once, as it also addressed the Rapier Problem brought up in a previous post! Having the Fort save based only on the original damage rolled rather than the mulitplied damage makes the rapier no more lethal on a crit than any other weapon of its size.

Wingo! Thanks for the input Drow Dude!

Looks pretty kewl.

I might try this out next week when I DM. It will be particularly dangerous since it's a low magic campaign and they have relatively limited access to magical healing.

I"ve used the rolemaster critical charts for years in my D&D games and when I converted to 3rd edition I had a long thought process about how to include the charts and not mess up weapon balance...I finally came up with the solution another poster had: Only allow rolls on the crit chart if a natural 20 is rolled no matter what the threat range is for the weapon.

After reading over your crit charts, I may switch to them instead of using my old system...though my players have grown very attached to them over the years, even the archer who took off his own ear with a fluky fumble and spent 6 months saving money for a regeneration spell to fix it, only to remove his ear once again on the very next shot after he had it regenerated.

In any case, great work on your crit system, I like it!

Thanks! Maintaining balance and yet having a fair degree of realism was very important to me. Im glad these crit effect rules are so well-received!

As always, if you decide to use them, please post back here to let me know how everything went! :)
