As for the article, it would indeed blow my mind if 5e was announced at Gencon this year. 4e announcement was a huge event, with countdown on the WotC front page for days up to Gencon, and I don't see WotC choosing to make a new edition a low-key event.

Don't get me wrong, I like/love 4e, but I still think they can do better, and I wouldn't mind a new edition. What can I say, I like buying books.

I think that maybe Mearls is laying the groundwork for 5e (as outlined in his LL articles), and such, but that we are still 1-2 years off seeing that edition.

If it happens it happens, if it doesn't it doesn't.

I had a friend who went to the San Diego comic con a couple weeks ago - he got a chance to talk to a couple WotC folks, and they mentioned to him that they were considering supporting older editions as well as 4e. No elaboration was given, but I can imagine something like DDI being used to provide some support for the older editions.

Anyways, that's just what he told me, so who knows. I'm here at Gen Con this week so we should know what's happening soon enough (Saturday from 10am - 12pm EST to be specific).

They have a new product seminar tomorrow. I doubt it's about 5e but I am curious if they will go back to rpg stuff instead of all these boardgames and cards.

I doubt the launch of 5e would be so low key. I suspect they will evolve 4e using the digital products and expand the digital stuff to cover previous editions. They might introduce some new stuff similar to essential classes.

They might label them Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but I think it would be mostly compatible with 4e just with extra details and more complicated classes. I think it is unlikely to be honest. They have 3e to use and it has a lot of mind share, they can try and grab back some of the customer from Piazo with 3e content.

I do wish they would get on with some Apps, now that I have my iPad.

And despite this being one of the biggest announcements for dnd the last, oh say 20 years, no one outside you and your friend has heard of this and it hasn't been mentioned anywhere on the internet in the passing weeks? Color me skeptical.

Woah easy now!

I was just relating a story I was told. I too was skeptical but thought I would share it here. I was not endorsing it.

I was at the product preview today and no such announcement was made as we all know.
