Critical Role is launching a new 8-week D&D 5E campaign on June 24th called Exandria Unlimited.

The show features Matt Mercer (as a player not DM), Aabria Iyenger (who will be the DM for this show), Aimee Carrero (who currently plays She-Ra), Robbie Daymond (voice of Marvel's animated Spider-man), Ashley Johnson (co-founder of Critical Role), and Liam O'Brien (also from the main Critical Role show).

Sounds smart. I think they stand to make more money in the long run if they get a popular show that lasts for years and generates income from spinoffs and side projects.

i highly doubt they just sold the show to amazon and just get paid as VO. i am sure they act as a producing entity like WB or Paramount and will executive produce which shares a bit of any deal they make through prime.

Yeah. They own their IP. Look at the cooyright notice in the Wildemount book. “The world of Exandria, its groups of individuals, its elements, its distinctive characters, and its locations are the sole property of Critical Role. All rights reserved.” They’re too smart to sell their IP to anyone. Even Amazon.

Pick-up by Amazon Prime means Amazon is paying for the production of season 2 and 3 rather than Kickstarter. And probably gave them extra money for the rights

Amazon's payments will go to the production costs of future seasons, but the rights surrounding an animated series picked up by a streaming service are not as simplistic or uniform as you make them out to be.

But it also means if it does well in terms of ratings and ad revenue, that goes to Amazon not them

Often, compensation is tied to views.

They're not going to get much more from the show in the future apart from the paychecks for doing the VO in later seasons. And maybe some extra cash if Amazon chooses to renew for a season 4 or 5

This is not correct, at all. They selected Amazon for exposure and compensation. They had other options. If things worked, generally, as you supposed, the people that own the IP of a series would have no incentive to make those series.

The cartoon really just becomes advertising for their merch and the stream. If it attracts a wider audience, then they make more money. If it's only watched by existing fans it's a small bonus

This is incredibly incorrect. The notion that all they're getting out of this is minimal voice over payments is very wrong. The idea that if it is a hit they have no leverage to collect higher amounts of funds is wrong. If they were only going to collect a minimal voice over fee and lose all profit participation, they'd have been better off selling blu rays. Your position basically boils down to, "Hey they were given 11 Million in KS funds, and there is no way they can benefit at all from that gift." That KS gave the many millions to work with and they're reinvesting it to make it grow. The notion that this is intended to only give them a small amount of VO funds makes no sense in any way.

Last time they revealed sub numbers they were at 20,000 or $50,000 a month. Some of that going to bills and studio space (likely half)
Critters guestinate they're around 40,000 subs now
That's $75,000 for the cast and crew
Probably $3-4,000 each per month
Plus ad revenue (dndbeyond.com and one other plus a couple during the break), merch sales, licensing deals for Pops, comics, novels and miniatures
They're likely doing quite well

For some (Sam, Liam, Tal) it's their side hustle. A thousand bucks for four hours "work" goofing with friends
For others it's more of a main job. Laura really focuses on the merch, Travis manages the business while Marisha is a producer and Ashley does the charity. But even then, Tal and Liam took point on the art books
Sam does feel like he does less with the brand. But he's also the one with the more successful day job, being an Emmy award winner

Marisha is actually an amazing Producer: when she left Geek & Sundry and they started their own channel with her in charge, G&S immediately took a downturn, and Critical Role maintained much of what was fun about G&S. Pretty clear that Marisha was responsible for a lot of that behind the scenes, and still is.

Has it ever been revealed what the overall name of their setting is, since Exandria & Wildemount are merely two continents in the setting? Like do they have an overall setting name yet?
