Kappei Yamaguchi, right? I liked him as Ranma Saotome (who was also voiced by Richard Cox, oddly enough), but I haven't heard him in Inuyasha yet.

Hayashibara's pretty good in it. It's the only thing I've heard her in*, but she's much more convincing at getting across the "boy-in-girl's-body" thing and emulating Yamaguchi's mannerisms than her English counterpart.

*Other than Evangelion, and I don't know that reading lines in a bland monotone for 20+ episodes counts as acting**.

Nah. The whole "people say Japanese voice acting is better because they don't understand Japanese" is a BS line that people who prefer dubs use without any real basis.

Not when the Japanese themselves say it. But whatever - your stance on the matter seems abundantly clear.

The fact of the matter is that voice acting in Japan (and a lot of other places outside the US for that matter) is much more highly regarded and something people actually go to school to study. And it's not just because of the animation industry. Much of it has to do with the huge number of Hollywood films that get dubbed into Japanese every year by the same voice actors.

I agree with this - as I said, in recent times there has been a huge improvement.

Plus, being able to judge how believable someone sounds and how well they emote isn't dependent on the language barrier anyway.

I don't agree, though a few might be lucky enough to be able to do so. Any linguists around?

Now, if you like dubs, that's fine.

What about Cowboy Bebop? She did Faye Valentine's voice. Surely you must have seen that?

While I do like Megumi Hayashibara, I do feel she's a bit overexposed. I've heard her voice in a ton of shows, so it gets kind of tiring hearing her.

Don't forget Lina Inverse. I thought she was fairly different in that role than usual. Lina's quite... we'll say loud.


Thought of another show I've found interesting. I''S Pure. I've only seen the first episode, but it has great production quality. The story seems to be a pretty average shonen romance, but it looks so good! I'm a sucker for pretty animation.

Actually... regarding Hayashibara, I remember she had a guest bit in several episodes of Mobile Police Patlabor. I didn't get a really good feel for her voice, though, so I can't judge on that basis.

Up until recently I was limited to watching dubbed anime on TV. Regarding Cowboy Bebop and The Slayers, I've only seen them in English, and only the first season of the latter. I really liked the dubbed version of Bebop, but as for Slayers... well, I'd gotten to like Lisa Ortiz for her performance as Deedlit in Record of Lodoss War, but her Lina Inverse was a little too shrill for me.

Apologies for bringing back an old thread, but I wanted to ask, what current anime out there is worth watching? Afraid I'm at a bit of a loss as to what anime is worth my time these days, Doctor Who has been occupying most of my time. To be fair though, there are some anime I'm looking forward to, the 2nd season of Victorian Romance Emma has just started in Japan, so I'll be looking for that when it's done. There's also The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya regular series which will be airing sometime later this year, so I'll be sure to catch that.

So any recommendations would be helpful.
