I don't understand the idea of "switching". I have 7 MMOs on my PC, I play 3 of them on a regular basis. I have a dozen single-player games that I bounce through daily. I play 2 editions of D&D(3.5/.75 and 4e), I quite enjoy SWSE when I get the chance and if I could get a Deadlands game together I'd do it in a heartbeat. That aside I'm an avid MTG player.

What is this "switching"? I'll probably add 5e to my list of "games I'm playing" at some point, right along side Pathfinder, Deadlands, WoW, SWTOR, AION and a dozen other games.

I wouldn't change a running campaign over to a new edition, I've done that before and I didn't really like the results.

I intend to take a look at 5E, but Pathfinder is basically my D&D game of choice right now. It's going to have to be very good to drop Pathfinder completely.

Uh, I assume that you don't have kids? A spouse? A career? Or some combination of the above?

Many gamers can't do what you do. I for one, and a few members of my group, struggle with once every two weeks due to other obligations (and wives!). I have two daughters, a full-time teaching job, have recently gone back to get a master's degree, and also have writing and other interests. I would love to play on a weekly basis, and would enjoy trying out other games, but 1/2 weeks with a skipped session every couple months = about 20 game sessions per year.

We have one group and, aside from the occasional one-shot, we do one campaign at a time.

The cast is:
The GM who is system-ambivalent but likes Paizo and doesn't appreciate the way WotC treats its people
The player who really likes Pathfinder and really, really likes Paizo
The player who is fine with Pathfinder, likes Paizo, and dislikes WotC
The new player who has only played Pathfinder, but has interacted enough with Paizo to like them
And the player who's so system-neutral they aren't even aware what system is being played most of the time

If it were my decision alone, I'd probably switch if 5e were head and shoulders better than Pathfinder. I have made some major changes to Pathfinder. But I don't think 5e would require any less from the playtest packets.

But my players... it's poor for most of their uses and they'd rather give Paizo money than WotC anyway. And nobody has any real complaints that would lead to switching. So, even if I wanted to switch, I'd be fighting a ton of inertia.

I'd be surprised if our next fantasy campaign (starting up early next year, probably) weren't Pathfinder. The one after that... harder to predict, but probably Pathfinder. And even if we did switch, I have a shelf full of indie games to choose from and a homebrew I can always go back to.

So chances of playing finished 5e look slim. If the book looks interesting enough to pick up just to read and more interesting for that purpose than the indie games I have on my list, I'll probably pick it up. But I don't expect to play it.

Cheers!

If I have time, and someone else is running it, then I may play but if I had to choose between the two then it would be Pathfinder every time.

I can see no scenario that has me playing D&D Next instead of Pathfinder.

(I don't have time to play/GM more than 1 game at a time.)

Since I'm only begrudgingly playing Pathfinder, I would probably "switch", depending on how Next does. It does depend on the other players in my gaming groups. Most of my 4e group is probably happier staying 4e, my attempts with Fate Core and 13th Age have been lukewarm. As for the guys I play Pathfinder with ... the GM is trying to push his own self-published setting. So, it's kind of a business decision for him, if Next takes off and is open to 3rd party stuff, I imagine he'll play and support it. But right now, he's focused on Pathfinder.

I'm with Shidaku on this - I'll just add it to my repertoire, same way I did Fiasco, Savage Worlds, and Pathfinder. More likely though, PF will still win out over long haul because my group's players just prefer the Pathfinder level of complexity for PCs.

I REALLY didnt care for how the 3E to 4E transition played out both from how WOTC handled it and from the fanbase level. Despite all that I bought the 4E gift set ran a few games and found that I didnt like the system. Paizo/Pathfinder came along and I like how they interact with their customers and I like how they treat their fans. I also happen to like the game and material that they produce. As I've stated before I'm subscribed to their AP line and their RPG line so I'm actually spending more money monthly with them than I've spent in a while. Never mind the in-store purchases of theirs that I make. I'm fairly certain that about 80-90% of my RPG budget goes to their products.

The only thing that I've purchased from WOTC in the past few years have been their 3 adventure boardgames. But I wont be purchasing or even likely playing 5E/NEXT.
