Cursed Item

i am sort of new to the Dungeons and dragons world and a few of my friends were playing. i joined in to see how to play and found myself really enjoying it. Many encounters later i stumbled upon an interesting gem that said it could give one wish. Turns out it was a gem of cursed wishing. I was turned into a raven, my friends cast polymorph on me to make me human, and then the wish was made to make it permanent. So now i have the problem that if someone casts dispel magic on me, i am back to raven all over. Also the gem left behind a purple ooze. Remove curse will not work on the curse, does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove it?

It seems to be a nonstandard item, so it is unlikely that anyone except your DM will be able to provide you with a definitive solution.

That said, one thing you can try is to gather information - ask priests, wizards, bards, sages, etc. if they know or have heard of any similar items (turning into a raven or the purple ooze may be a significant symptom), and if so, how it can be countered.

It may be that your DM intends this to be a long-term problem for you, and you will slowly find clues as to the nature of this item over several adventures, and only get the curse removed after a final quest. In the meantime, the curse may be occasionally problematic, or perhaps even beneficial from time to time.

yeah, when i asked my dm about it he said it was the gem of cursed wishing. It is an artifact from the tomb of horrors that we found in the treasure horde of a dragon we killed. A wish will not work to remove it as it is too far in the past. I might be able to miracle the curse away, but since the wish would not work i do not think miracle will. Also i learned that the purple ooze disappears and turns back into the orange orb after a week. So now the curse remains with no cure found at moment but the ooze is taken care of (ooze was a problem as it was near our house), thanks for the help so far. anymore ideas? when i asked my dm about stuff he said that the curse would not go away on its own unless i found the cure. then he told me to research, so i am doing just that.

Assuming this is 3.5, there is no inherent temporal limit on Wish. That said, if the DM says that Wish doesn't work, then Wish doesn't work and he has his own plans.

I am a bit confused about the order of things. Which Wish was the cursed one? The one that transformed you to a raven? What did you originally wish for?

As a side note, its kinda unfair to take the Gem of Cursed Wishing out of the ToH. Finding it as a treasure hoard is a bit different than coming across it in the original module. I mean if you saw this:

I think he may have meant research in game

Mechanical solutions: Consider using Contact Other Plane, Legend Lore, a bardic knowledge check, divination spells, or as a last resort a [Limited] Wish or Miracle (expensive!) to find specifically "Who can tell us how to lift this curse" -- since you've already brought this level of power to bear, and it creates a fun adventure for everyone, it's worth a try.
The DM might stonewall you, though, if they'd rather have you quonk a bit longer.

thanks guys. actually it was a wish for polymorph, since the gem perverts wishes i was permanently morphed into a raven, fair deal i suppose. We are playing again this friday and one of my fellow dungeoneers is helping me by casting miracle and questioning his deity. If that does not work i will wait for other suggestions or avoid dispel magic until i can remove the curse

and yes, to malraux, being a newbie i was not thinking of cursed items, we stumbled across the gem in a dragon's horde, it was not evil and surrounded by dead skeletons like in the TOH quest (have not played that yet). However if i had known more about cursed items then i would have avoided it.

Miracle is a bit overpowered for what you want. Look at commune or divination.
