Cynical amusment re: today's WotC site updates

(First, a premature apology for the admittedly snide tone of this post. It's been just one of those days, and I'm feeling grumpy and more old and bitter than usual!)

For starters, this article presents a CR23 unique vrock when the Fiendish Codex (oh so controversially...) put the high end of Demon Lord power around about that range. Then it says that the Lords level of power is 'near-divine' Hmm. Not satisfied with that, they then used the 3e (Savage Species) ECL 16 for a vrock, rather than the 3.5e ECL 18. And the ECL doesn't include any modification whatsoever for the minimum 5 extra Outsider HD he would have had to gain to advance to Huge size.

Ooh, an article on introducing Spawn of Tiamat into your game (or 'Spawns' of Tiamat, as they put it). Mind you, the article doesn't actually give any hints for integrating the Spawn into the mythology of your campaign, which might actually have been useful. The whole push-selling of the Dragonspawn is really starting to get on my nerves. They take up a sizeable percentage of the pagecount of MMIV, a sizeable percentage of the miniatures in the WotDQ set, and pretty much all the preview material we've seen for the MMIV. Seriously, it looks like someone at WotC has decided to make these damn things popular through hype, advertising, and cross-promotion, no matter what it takes. Is there so little interesting material in the MMIV that the Dragonspawn are all they want to tell us about?

Oh, and 'Arcanisses' is the silliest-sounding plural ever, so there! :p

Ok, enough whining. Feel free to ignore!

It is a little snide...but I have to agree with the dragonspawn sentiment, at least. I don't like the way they promote new monster concepts by flooding the market with related buzz. The dragonspawn don't particularly interest me, or at least not any more than any other new monster.

Spawn of Tiamat... The new drow?
More like a desparate attempt by one of the designers to make something that will have "traction."

Projected result: utter failure. If they continue to shove the Spawn down our throats, I predict it will have an anti-advertising effect.

I've seen that said after most new monster books...and yet the Drow still seem to survive.

Cursed Elves.

I actually like the spawn. I'm sick to death of the drow. The next time I see Salvatore, I'm going to kick him in the junk.

'Tis the Year of the Dragon.
Even though I am not fond of drow, I do not recall dozens of bland and poorly-designed drow-inspired monsters appearing during the Year of the Drow.

Those of us contributing to the Dragonlance setting are seeing people on DL message boards point out these new dragonspawn and saying "wow! cool! how can we use these!" and our response is something along the lines of "excuse me, haven't you seen all the ones we already have?"

Cheers,
Cam

Hey, Dragonspawn are the reason I'm not getting any WotDQ minis this time around. I had the money earmarked for two cases of minis. I love the fire elemental and some other minis, but I don't want to get stuck was a metric assload of Dragonspawn. If I did a lot of DDM by itself, I might not care, but I use the minis primarily for D&D.

So, it looks like I may get Tact-tiles. I'm also trying to find a copy of Fantasy Hero. Not sure what I'm going to do with the rest of the money. If I find somewhere to unload (i.e. for money or trade) any dragonspawn (and drow) minis -- or find out that they are vanishingly rare -- I may yet get a case of minis.
